I have 2 Kato/Atlas Northern Pacific RS-11 #910, I want to make these more real, here is what I want to do
replace air and fuel tanks for ones that are more to the real deal. remove fixed plastic grab irons and replace with real grab irons. replace radiator fan cover add mu hose connector. add hoses. add parking brake and chain engine pull hooks step lights speed cable. make fuel filler neck and cap.
the only cutting I will have to do is to remove the fan, fuel tanks, air tanks and grab irons.
The paint scheme on the older atlas are more correct for the road numbers, the new atlas has the newer paint scheme that appeared on the RS-11 number s 913-917.
I am looking at doing 902.
This is my first chop shop project.
wish me luck.

To redo the fuel tank I will take the existing cut out the air tanks, smooth, then cut in the middle to shorten.

after separating the fuel tank, I will need to mill the frame so the new fuel tank will fit.

Can you provide a photo link of 902? I'm trying to visualize what you intend to do. Are you shortening or narrowing the furl tank? If you shorten the fuel tank too much you could compromise the motor mount. here is a link www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=837148I don't think it would compromise the motor mount as I don't need to take that much off.

I don't think I will be doing much more to this other than tidy up some pain and work a little on the hand rails. This is really my first attempt at detailing, I would love to add some other parts, but it is a learning curve. I am happy with the outcome. The good news I have 2 more RS-11's one is the same as this, but It will be renumbered then detailed the same. The other is a newer atlas, undec, which I going to make into BN, and I have a undec shell, I will also do into BN, so all I have to do is swap shells. This loco is equipped with Soundtraxx Tsunami 251 v12. I did not have a photo of NP 910 so I used NP 909. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=920905
