Looks like your in for some series kit bashing !
Theses are Phase III units with the extra long clean air room and the relocated prime mover along with the angular blower duct . The model that Atlas has announced is the phase I which is basically a turbo charged GP38-2.
I have been working on a ATSF Phase II GP39-2 for some time and it is certainly different.

Yeah..fun.. I am looking at using a GP50 as the starting point for these..should be fun! I was not sure about those Radiator grills until you said GP50, and yes they are bigger than those on the GP38-2. Another option would be the P2K GP60 Ian

Well..the difference is price..an old Athearn BB GP50 is more in my price range..I feel better cutting up a cheaper model rather than one I have to pay over $60 for...plus the dynamic brakes on these GP39's are different than those on the GP60's. Dave C

Dave C The dynamic brakes on these units are unique, so some cross kiting and kit bashing is need irrespective of the stating point. I am modeling ATSF and a BN phase II units, both using RMP and Cannon parts, so I am doing this the hard way ! For the ATSF unit, I am using an Athearn GP40-2 blister, replacing the fan and exhaust hatch. The BN unit is more complex, the left hand side is from a GP40-2, the rear right hand side is from a GP38-2 and the fwd right hand side is from a GP50, replacing the exhaust grill with one from a Cannon Turbo Hatch. Looking that the ex UP unit, the Turbo dynamic brake blister looks to be the mirror of the BN unit. Photos to Follow. Ian

Wow..good catch..after reading your post there..I looked a little closer at the photos..nice. The "current" AA is the remaining portion of the old AA that still carries the name. (Great Lakes Central [exTSBY] operated the rest that has not been removed) and operates between Toledo and Osmer (siding just north of Ann Arbor). The "current" AA operates 3 GP38's (7771, 7781, 7802..exCR/PC..same numbers) and the 2 GP39-2's.

Wasn't the Ann Arbor attached to the DT&I railroad for a while? I know they shared the same scheme for a while.

Yes ..twice actually. The first was 1903-1908, then from 1963 to 1976, when the AA was included in the Conrail merger. Thankfully the State of Michigan purchased the AA and rolling stock. It became the "Michigan Interstate RR-Ann Arbor Railroad System". The AA, as it is now, began operations in 1988. Dave C

Tom Busack had an article in Model Railraoder a several years ago (April 1990?) on kitbashing a pair of ph. III MKT GP39-2's (which, btw, use the same carbody as the GP49). Both models were bashed from GP50 shells, but one used Cannon & Co. hood doors while the other was built with modified Athearn doors. Both looked equally impressive, but the C&C door unit looks like less work.
