I have started building a chessie (B & O ) Sd40-2. I started with an athearn blue box dummy decorated in ATSF. I stripped the paint added the frame rails fuel filler piping and tank details. As this is a very budget build i will not be changing the fans on the roof. they are q fans and i know the b and o units were not fitted with q fans but i am sure we can make up a feasible reason as why this unit does....eg rebuild...Chessie didnt die at my house. lifting eyes were ones i had lying around... they are too large but this will not be a top shelf model. the air tanks are of a wrecked genesis loco. the genesis loco also donated its motor and hex drives. the shafts have been shortened and it has an atlas dcc decoder to go in it that is payment for a decoder installation for a friend. i know the unit wont be 100 percent accurate but it is just to fill out the roster till substitutes can be built. will post pics once painted. in all the unit owes me $30 and that was to purchase the loco from ebay. Cool. I 've always wondered why Chessie never ordered more of these units....would have been nice. Here's a link to another modeler's SD40-2 project. Jeff Henke's Chessie SD40-2

Could be it is only me, but I think the comment regarding the lifting eyes was uncalled for. I know if it was my build I would not be happy! Matthew

Matthew The comment was intended to be humerus (inspired by the fictional dialog between Little Red Ridding Hood and the wolf masquerading as her grandmother), rather than critical of the modeler's efforts. Apologies to anyone who may have been offended. Edited to add: I think it will turn out to be an excellent model.

Looks good. How did you go about adding the frame rails?

the chassis has relief under where the walkway sits so i cut channel in half to resemble the lower part of the rail and used full section behind the air tanks. the chassis had to be modified to fit the genesis motor so i really needed to fit these to cover the gaps. it is just to give the impression of the frame rails not to be 100 percent accurate

Has anyone tried milling down the frame portions on the outside under the walkways before. Just wondering how sturdy the frame would be where the trucks mount. Any suggestions or comments? This is the first picture I have posted, so I hope it works.

Justin,
Lots of people have done just what you proposed - the frame rails can then be added to the shell (since they are styrene, it's easy to glue them to) and the frame will slide up between the frame rails you add.
The frame is still plenty sturdy, for the model, but you'll need to be cautious while cutting so you don't break/bend the frame.
Regards, Brian

Hey Dan,
Chessie is an old fav of mine, even though I don't model that road. ( I almost did... ) anyway, adding the frame rail I think is something that always adds great interest to a model, so with that kind of detail, I bet you'll wanna keep this around when it's done.
Justin, yes as Brian says the frame remains sturdy, and you need to be careful, not only of damage to the frame, but to yourself as well. Cutting zamack (the metal these things are made of) -I bet even with a proper mill is a slow process. The only advice I can offer is to be patient, it won't be a quick job.

a mate an i have also played with milling a bachmann frame.....FAIL. the frame flew to pieces on the mill where the trucks mount simply way too thin. on the good side i just got the right fans for this model... not cannon but nice brass ones - thank You Matthew.. so now i can have the model more accurate i have fitted them and will post a pic when i get more done. waiting for a few DW parts. i will be holding on to this one but it wont be the helper set i was going to build.i have noticed in some pics that not all of the sd40-2s had the slotted battery box. unit 7608 is an example.

It appears that the 7608 may have had its original battery box cover swapped out during an outshipping at some point in its career. With EMD's being so modular in their design, it's easy for hoods, horns, and other components get moved around. I even have a photo of a B&O SD50 still in Chessie paint during the CSX era that (at least on one side) didn't have the mailslot and all of SD50's were delivered with this feature. B&O 7608 - with mailslot!

Sweet! Chessie for the win! CSX Can't compare. Well, maybe if the "C" was the Chessie cat, they could. Just try and beat THAT Norfolk Southern! Now that CSX has a low operating ratio, your "Thoroughbred Service" might be challenged by CSX's "PURR-fect Transportation."

Sweet! Chessie for the win! CSX Can't compare. When clean, CSX's 'Bright Future' scheme made for some pretty engines. Still, though, nothing can beat Chessie.

the mech in it is quite the hybrid too. it uses the old athearn blue box chassis with athearn gear towers and of all things a bachmann branchline motor. the old school athearn universals with the splines pop right into the bachmann flywheels. using the old athearn spline driveline ties the whole thing together. with the tcs dcc decoder the unit runs as well as my proto's. superior slow speed too. Not fantastic you say? Rubbish; it's a great looking model; the under-frame really makes it stand out.
