Hello all: I am working on an older P2K blue box GP9 and converting it to a "B" unit. I bought the appropriate NCE decoder as I'll be using this system. This is my first decoder install...I'm hoping it will be easy as there won't be any ditch lights, beacons or headlights to program...only speed, momentum, direction and such.
The instructions aren't too clear on installation. Am I to just put this in after removal of the old board and is soldering of the connections required? Are the connections under the board, as there are no pins topside? Is this blue box too old for a decoder? I'll be starting this later this week.
Thanks for any help...

Answer some questions. Is a 8 pin decoder? I assume this because you talk about no pins?
Any engine can have a decoder put in it, you just need the appropriate decoder for that type of engine.

I called NCE yesterday and one of the guys there assessed the situation and it would appear that my older P2K GP9 needs the D13SR decoder which is for those units that don't have the eight-pin connectors on the board...

You just need to hard wire and be done. That is a quick simple task. You can use any harness too! On the older engines like that I always do a ohm check, just to make sure I have no leak on the frame. Use a VOM (Volt Meter)
