The EMD demonstrators for the GP59 model were built with an oddly "streamlined" cab, which featured a pointed windshield and rounded corners on every forward-facing surface. There are only a handful (3? 4?) of these running around. There's 34 pictures of this locomotive, including closeups, in this album: s927.photobucket.com/albums/ad116/therudycometh2/GP59%204606/For all of you modern NS modelers, these pictures should help you out if you ever decide to do one of these!!

The three GP60s demos were built in the same fashion. All three of them are now on CSXT via LLPX. Non dash two GP38s and GP40s were traded. I have made plans for one of these, but nothing has matured of it and won't for a while...

EMDs first attempt at streamlining since the GP-30, eh?

If you look the corners on the short hood are more rounded, as well as it looks to me like the forwards surfaces are swept back slightly (may be an optical illusion)

The corners on the short hood ARE more rounded... the radius of the curve is about an inch and a half more than a normal EMD nose. All of the forwards surfaces are angled back, including the entire cab face. Compare these two pictures, the first one is the prototype, the second one is her later sister: Just noticed that the prototype has a ratchet and the production engine has a wheel....

It kinda reminds me of a tank, or an up-armored vehicle.

Does anyone offer a kit for this cab? I've always wanted to build a correct GP60 or GP59 demo unit, but the cab baffles me as to where to even begin.

I wish someone would produce that dynamic brake hatch so I could do some of the earlier SP GP60 that have the vertical nose light.

David Hussey has a lot of close up pics with measurements of the early DB hatch on his PBase. I wish I would have known about that site when I built my early DB hatch. Here is the link: www.pbase.com/dh30973/gp60details

There were three EMD GP-59 demonstrators and NS got all three of them They are numbered 4606 thru 4608. They were built in 1986. I remember when they were still painted in the EMD colors and still belonged to EMD.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I think the pix on Dave's pbase ate of the second gen dynamics. They're square. If you look at Rudy's photos, even they are kinda rounded. I do believe that the 60 demos also had that feature until production.

Nevermind...... But also, am I the only one that thinks the upper edge of the NS pix looks 'rounder'? Rick
