Dear Diesel Detailer Forum, I was wondering what I'll need for a new kitbashing job I hope to complete for my local club. I am eyeing up a old Conrail GP38, or GP38-2 gotta look again. I wanted to make it into this. (If it's a -2 www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=299944&nseq=10) I definatly wanted to model a high hood. I know the converting of the horn hooks will be easy, everything else is sorrta of a hit or miss. I was curious what I would need for this project. I see a Cannon & Company high hood cab. But thats it. Help.

Yeah, this is my first detailing kitbash, going to the lights under the steps sounds like something a little more advanced.

wow ns, your first job and you're cutting off the nose. I can't wait to see how it comes out. What type of plastic glue are you using?

Go more simple, and use atlas parts for the nose and cab! Everything comes with time, work slowly, and BE PATIENT!!!! ;D

ns9708: You might also want to add new grab irons, lift rings and the curved fan grab. You should be able to find these on the Highball Graphics site. Yeah, I did plan on getting some new grab irons, maybe bid on a set on ebay. Lift rings and the curved fan grab will be something on the list. wow ns, your first job and you're cutting off the nose. I can't wait to see how it comes out. What type of plastic glue are you using? I will try the Micro-Mark glue. They say it's like the other stuff, just cheaper. Any experince with this anyone? Go more simple, and use atlas parts for the nose and cab! Now that you say that, I was curious how I could get those.

ah yes, where to get those Atlas parts... If Atlas doesn't have what you need in stock (Athearn typically doesn't) I know a guy on ebay that has most of Atlas's parts for sale. When I get home I'll post that url.
oh careful, pro weld and these types of glues will melt plastic, which is how they work... but if the plastic is really thin, say .005... I've gotten dimples that I had to fill in with putty before proceeding farther. Just to let you know if it happens to you, it's not like you got a bad batch of glue...

here's the link for atlas parts on ebay. This page has changed since last time I was there, but it seems if you can't find what you need, this guy will have it. myworld.ebay.com/sooo-much-stuff/

ns9708, I just finished up an Athearn unit for a friend and one thing I really liked was LaserKit windows. I am not sure where to get them or even if they are still made, but I have now bought out what my local hobby shop had of them and they are easy to install. I just think that a loco looks classy with flush fitting windows. I can't wait to see this when you're done with it!!!
