This is a pic I took in El Paso, Tx back in Jan 28 2009, when I was waiting to get into the Budweiser Distribution center.

Yes, its a slug, UP has a huge roster of these all over the place. I've seen these in Los Angeles California, El Paso Texas, Baytown Texas, Houston Texas, etc... etc... they pretty much have them where ever UP has a good sized yard.

Great catch & Nice shot! I thought they were just gutted out ex SP B30s and 36s and were used for RC reciever units. I came across a few not long ago down in Alexandria La.

They are prolific down here in Houston, but they are not slugs, they are Remote Control Receiver Units.

Whats the point of having them if they're only R/C receivers, I guess that explains why they don't have traction motors, just prototype dummy locos. Or is it like what the NS did for branch lines, splitting the 2 locos with a spacer car for bridges that can't handle two locos at the same time.

The point was to install radio remote receivers in them, they can be MU'ed to any locomotive, UP or a foreign road loco and make the whole consist remote. No they are not spacer's the UP does not have any branch lines that need a spacer like the Southern did.

Hmmm.... Ok, I guess so UP won't have to modify every locomotive with R/C, so they just hook up to any loco that is not equipped and run with it.
