Now that I am back into the hobby, my mind is getting into modeling mode. I know that when I start, my skills will be rusty and I remembered what I did when I started years ago. This may be very basic to the members on this board, but I will mention it for beginners, and I will most likely be the one asking for help all the time, so here is my first little contribution. Here it is: Amass huge quantities of diesel shells.
Whenever out and about, I always picked up cheap shells, a good bit for less than $1.00, at flea markets, hobby shops, and/or garage sales. Today we have the internet to help us find some deals, but I still like to go out and hunt. I would pick up any HO shell I could get my hands on for cheap, no matter how ugly. I would use some of these for parts, but mostly, I would use them for practicing cutting out sections with razor saws, scraping off molded details, drilling, painting, decal application, and kitbash experiments learning to erase seams and gaps.
I had a good sized “Bone Yard” and some pieces proved to be helpful. So if you are beginning the hobby, off a long layoff, or just want to hone your skills, dissect some old shells. I know this may be obvious and I’ll try to sweep the cobwebs out of my head and share some skills/techniques

Good idea, some of my best finds come from the junk other people don't want and any and all skills and techniques certainly are welcome.

I have done automotive and semi-truck modeling for years. I only started doing railroad modeling this year. It is amazing that even as similar as the two hobbies are, they are vastly different. It has been some what difficult to switch gears. Years and years of railfanning as a youth help a good deal.

ya, I'd agree. cutiin up quick just to see if your 'plan' will on a not so straight forward kitbash can prove worthwhile. I was saying in another post that I've had a few of those 'I gotta take a minute' incidents... lol. Also for practicing weathering or just paint matching experiments with decals ect.... I do it too.
