I have decided to kit bash an EMC SC switcher as owned by the Santa Fe. This is in N Scale and will be kit-bashed from a Kato NW2 and a Lifelike SW900. Just part of the LL SW900 will be used the rest being from the Kato NW2. The prototype: I'll add the picture here later - I can't find a decent web shot. Diagram: www.railroadingonline.net/railroads/atsf/drawings/dc2150.gifThere were a few variations so I'll pick one with the 4 vents on the side and make it road number 2151. The model: I'll start detailing it when the shell is completed and nooks and crannies smoothed out. I'll post the altered mechanism later - had to mill out the frame a bit to shorten it and allow the cab to be moved backwards an N scale foot.

That is Peachy, Alister! Those offset stacks look nice, how did you make them?

Thanks Robert, The stacks are from the UP NW2 switcher that I stripped ;D They should be shortened at some point but I need some better photo's of Santa Fe SC's so I get the look right. The stacks will stay at their full length for now.

I have cut and shut the rear porch step so all the basic work is done. Got to get the filler out and detail parts out to finish off before paint. Might have to flatten the long hood more though. ;D

Nice. I was just thinking the other day that I hadn't seen that many switcher kitbashes.

OK here's some more pikkies, the shell is just about there, the mechanism needs to be milled out 1 mm at the front so that the cab front lines up with the front of the brake piston thingy on the rear truck (bogie). I have added wire details like the grabs along each side of the long hood and BLMA steel grabs on the side of the hood. The cut levers were bent from piano wire and were a pain. They are attached using BLMA EMD large lift rings, the piano wire threads through the holes, the bronze wire I had won't . I have also added a BLMA trainline. And lastly I have to put the louvres back on the rear step. I'm not after a perfect pristine look, this will be painted Black / Silver and will be weathered so it needs to be a little wonky for want of a better word. Any thoughts about doing this better or should I add more details to it? Okay this is N scale but you can get down to detailing it quite a bit. What would you HO guys do with this? just remember there is no Cannon and Co for N scale ;D ;D ;D

Alister, as a suggestion, Ngineering has some nice N scale grille material, in square and diamond pattern. It is a little pricey initially, but a little can go a long way. I use it for HO vent screen on passenger cars and it looks pretty good.

Robert: You have just solved a dilemma I've had on a project where I needed fine mesh and couldn't find any. Danke! You're Velcome!

Thanks Robert I had been wondering about that and I did find some finer mesh in my parts box so i'll make the change and see how it looks.

Unfortunately the steel mesh I have is too fine and my LHS is out of stock for the correct size. It will be a little while until I get some stock - I live outside the USA. I might try etching some. There will be a delay in finishing this unfortunately

I got some etched mesh last week, I'll get cracking on this over the next few days and post some pictures as I complete the details. I had a wee break for a while ;D

Cool thanks for that Jerry. I was working from some diagrams and only a few pictures. I'll get the file out and flatten that hood!!! It's still in primer cause I've been a bit slack ;D
