Cool looking unit. Didn't the C&NW have a pair of those as well or was it the ATSF? They both did, CNW 6000 (SD45) ATSF ####? (SD45-2) which was rebuilt to a SD40-2 and worked on the UTAH RWY.

Now I like that...looks very sharp and clean! Great work and attention to detail.
As for the ATSF, the CAT re-powered unit was SD45-2 #5625. Rebuilt in July 1987 with a 4200-horsepower Caterpillar Model 3612 engine; renumbered to ATSF 5855, later sold to Morrison-Knudsen in March 1993 where it was reconditioned and equipped with Maxitrax wheel slip control. Unit was part of a 12 unit order for SD40M-2's from M-K, 9001-9011, with UTAH 9012 (Subject loco) being the odd duck.
In 1995 the Caterpillar engine was removed and a standard 20 cylinder EMD engine rated at 3200 horsepower was installed and it was set back to the UTAH Ry. in 1996.
Lease ended in 2001 and it was sold to HELM Leasing under the same number, HELM 9012.
Just a little info!

Steve you did a heck of a job on this unit. I want to build one of these sometime. Do you have any pictures of the twin exhaust stacks. Glenn

Glenn, the only roof shot I've seen is of a Santa Fe unit so I don't know if my single exhaust was a mistake. I'm sure there is a picture somewhere.
Greg, I think I took slides before it was primerred but it will take some time to find them.

Great Job, honestly I notice the slight color difference between the black on the shell and frame, and the color of the Trucks, very nice touch.

that is really nice looking, and not that I'm partail to SD units. Can you give us some tips on how you did the rings and chains on the handrails? Are they metal rails or plastic?

When I built this engine I thought I'd try to have the chains run between units (my CP 5482 being the other one). I drilled #79 holes in the front of the stanchons for DA eyebolts. The chain was attached to one eyebolt and the other was cut partially open to receive the chain. The stanchons are Smokey Valley and the rails are Detail Assoc. wire.
