I did detail and paint this ex UP 3365 SD40-2 into HLCX #6230. (ok, I did cheat, I did actually strip an ATSF model)while I was looking at prototype pictures I saw a pipe running all the way along the longhood roof to the cab. with the help of a friend in a german US forum I found the explanation. Horn Location
Units UP 3123-3415 (including 8000-8074) had their horns mounted on a bracket between the first and second radiator fans. Beginning in 1978, the horns on these units were relocated to the cab roof. The air to the relocated horns is piped forward along the top of the hood from the original outlets, which were either at the front right or rear right side of the radiator fan plate. Starting with unit 3416, the UP SD40-2s were delivered with horns mounted on the cab roof front.that's the pipe on the roof you can see on the model... detail parts from BLMA, Atlas and Sunrise, phosphor bronce wire for the pipe, decals "home brew" and from a Microscale CSX sheet, paint Polly Scale

Steve, do you have any good pic's of the roof so I can see how it is done. I thought that you may have a pic of the UP engine.. I am doing SD40-2R snoot in UP with the new style paint job.

Makes me wonder what a Snoot in Dark Future would look like.

I always wondered why the railroad would go through all the piping and brackets to bring the air to the relocated horn instead of running a new line from the horn valve through the cab roof... Seems a lot simpler... I've seen it done to move the horn to the rear and that makes sense...

I was thinking the same thing about the piping... Still, a great detail to model... Especially in N scale??
