I know there are probally many asking this, but i opened up my Athearn KCS AC44CW and noticed it has the 8 pin plug and the 9 pin plug. Does the 8 pin plug work?

Damian, the 8 pin plug will work as is if it is the one with the black plug. The early RTR engines just had holes in the board and you had to solder each pin in. I would use the 9 pin plug, saves you money on the decoder and doesnt take up as much space.

I really would reccomend the 9 pin plug. You don' have to pay extra for the wire harness and it is easier to get it all under the shell.

I concur with Christian on this. Just plug a standard decoder in and avoid using the harness. The less connections you have, the less you have to worry about a possible short/failure.
