A friend of mine asked me (again) to start a project for him. He´s a CSX modeler and wants a GP40/GP30 mother/slug set for his layout. Here is a prototype picture: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=669184I start with the GP40-2. As Atlas has(d) only Phase 1 GP40-2´s, i had to install new grilles from Cannon&Co. Just when i had all the parts ordered and cut out the old grills Atlas announced that it will release a Phase 2 GP40-2 with the correct grills. Damn. But it was an easy rebuild so no worry. Beside the different grilles the unit also will have ditchlights which will be lighted with miniature LED´s. Here are two pictures of the remodeled grilles and the ditchlights with led´s installed to check how they fit.

What brand of ditch lights are you using on the build? These are the plastic ones from detail associates...

Damn, that means more work, but thanks for the hint. Do you know which type of anticlimber would be right?

And depending on how exact you want to be, there is a little more work involved. Before she was CSXT 6901, she was C&O 4393 - a phase II c1 GP40-2. www.trainweb.org/chessiephotos/photos/GP40-2/4393cs-c&o.jpgCompred to the phase I unit, II c1 units have the following details: * 88" short hood * Front anticlimber * Exhaust sincer hatch * Q-fans * Dynamic brake grids moved back (it's basicaly an inverted GP50 styled hatch)* No dynamic brake batten strip * Welded ECAFB * Welded cab sides * Being that this is an ex-Chessie unit, you'll need the Cannon & Co mailslot battery box covers (you may have to replace the whole sub-base assembly). * Angled fan grab * Notched stepwells Happy meldeling!!!

Sounds like its better to build this model completely out of parts.. Well, i think adding these mentioned details is not so important for me, i can live with a few (or lot?) mistakes... ;D

You could cut your own mailslots into the shell if you wanted to.

Nice work so far on "Mother"! I've got a slug based on a P2K GP30 (actually built 3. 1 Front Range,2 P2k, one for a friend) More photos and the write up should be in the September RMC!

Cutting is not that hard, I used a Dremel tool to cut out the most of the sides, then i removed the rest with an sharp exacto knife and a file. Harder than that is to prevent the thin lower part from braking while working on it...
