I'd have to agree with cp9302 - the first thought that went through my head was: "How long has this thing been outta service?"
I really like the look, it just shouldn't be used that heavy on equipment still in service. The details are extremely visible, so it definitely is an improvement, I just think it's really heavy for a unit that is still running.
Maybe try using the same technique with some black chalk, or whatever color is close to what the trucks would have been painted while they were in service. That might tone things down enough, and make it look like the unit still belongs on the road, instead of in the scrap yard.
If you did a scrap load like that, it would look really good in a gondola of some sort, especially with weathering like this, and some dents and dings as well. That would loook like it belonged, but here, its too much.

Fred is right, I would try highlighting with a brush and very light touch of india ink to restore a little more life into the trucks. The india ink imparts an oily or greasy tone to the road dust, while letting the base color come through, suggesting heavy use and infrequent maintenance.

Needs a lot more gray/black and a lot less brown/rust...... But the texture is great and brings out the detail.

After seeing redp's results, I tried a similar process on the trucks for my GP39-2 Rescues with my recently aquired Bragdon's powders. (Bragdon Info: img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-8/1069636/BragdonsPowder.jpg ) I mixed some H2O, alcohol (for a wash) and "Dust Bowl Brown" powder (not chaulk) and painted it on the sideframes, let it dry and then dusted with 5 or 6 different rusts, greys and black powders. The Prototype trucks were originally black. Here's how they turned out: I'm still debating about whether to add the sanding lines now, I can always add them later. In the lower photo is the prototype: the Bragdon powders is the same stuff I use. I love it. And your trucks came out real good. P

The second example (weathered black) really looks like the unit is still working hard, I like the look. Will you please share your technique?

The second example (weathered black) really looks like the unit is still working hard, I like the look. Will you please share your technique? Well, I used Bragdon Weathering Powders and alcohol I got the side frames wet with "clean" Alcohol. then dabbed the black powder on while it was still wet (dirt and rust tones were underneath).....wait a few min. Then using a brush with more clean alcohol, made downward strokes. -The stuff got kind of pasty. (did this 2 or 3 times. cleaning the brush each time to take the excess off) then let dry. P

Those look great P! Bragdon powders are great to work with. I like them so much better than the ground chalks. It really doesn't take long to get the techniques down on using chalks. Just takes a little practice on a junk shell.

That looks a LOT better. Those trucks look like they are still in service, still running hard, and haven't seen the paint booth in a while. I never saw the E-units in service, but these are definitely better than the shiny-stock-black-plastic look. Nice job!
