Hi all.Just wondering if anyone has ever tried to model the US Army MRS1,or the slightly similar yet just as rare RSDI.I figure the slanted cab on the RSD1 should be the easy part. The trucks on that beast would be another matter entirely.Maybe Kato RSC2 power assemblies with a bash of heavyweight passenger trucks? This could get tricky. Thanks,Anthony

www.arkits.com/images/catalogue/l007b.jpghi you could order this from AR Kits in Australia and use it as the basis of the Alco MRS1 perhaps? to introduce myself, i'm a TT scale modeller mainly interested in modelling 3'6" prototypes. (TTn3 1/2) just here to get inspiration. i have a thing for US rebuilds, eg Rock Island FAs with EMD innards and repowered RSes etc. also like baldwin babyfaces and other strange beasts like FM C-liners. ben

Fellers, Please include me here on the research for doing RSD-1 Alco's Right after WWII the Alaska Railroad got a full roster of these monsters on those outrageous three axle trucks. I have found nothing close to the trucks on the market. If you have good photos of the trucks that is what I need to get started. I plan to use an Atlas RSD 4/5 Chassis, (Made in Japan 37701). The truck wheel base is correct but the side frames are all wrong and have roller bearings. We need the large friction bearing journals different equalizer bars and brake rigging. With good photos It may be we can fabricate and then cast these parts in duplication. Both sides are different because of the unequal spacing so it will take two patterns. The Atlas RS1 Classic body will not fit over the RSD 4 guts with out some work and it is about 18" to short on the long hood end to fit on the RSD 4 chassis. This is doable. The RSD4 Fuel and air tank are just slip on plastic pieces. I already have a pattern and have cast the odd shaped fuel tanks for my construction of the ARR #1070 pictured here: alaskarails.org/creations/PD-1070/index.htmlThis RSF-1 project was completed several years ago and is due for some updates. If anyone has drawings or detail photos of the RSD-1 trucks please share. You can see the real deal at the Tennessee Valley Railroad, in Chattanooga. Pat Durand, Wasilla Alaska

Pat,truly beautiful and rare units.I saw a thread for an Australian loco manufacturer whose name escapes me now, with an alco roadswitcher with what appears to be the slanted cab for this RSD1.When I find it I will post it.

If anyone has drawings or detail photos of the RSD-1 trucks please share. You can see the real deal at the Tennessee Valley Railroad, in Chattanooga. There's also one in Strasburg, PA in the RR Museum of PA. Unfortunately, I don't have any better pictures of it... I wish you had told me a month ago while I was there!!!

Thanks for the photo update Rudy. You have captured a former Alaska Railroad loco in the Zoo at Strassburg. The high arch of the roof and the inward slant of the cab make for very cramped quarters which you can only appreciate by setting in the cab. The ARR fleet was all delivered to the Federally owned railroad upon their return from service in Iran and Europe, thus the close clearance cabs. The ARR just made do rather than rebuild the cabs. I have a dozen standard RS-1 cabs for donor material to build some cabs.
No RSD-1 units are left in Alaska, so the trucks are the big problem for me. If I had good drawings or detail photos that would be great.
Need to know dimensions of the journals, brake cylinders, and how they are equalized so I can build two patterns (one for each side because of unequal spacing). I can then make side frame castings that will fit the Atlas RSD4 truck.
If anyone else is interested in this project, please contact me off line.

For those that missed it under another thread, I did get my RSD-1 built for Alaska RR #1029
See Alaska RR #1029 under Prototypes not offered or something like that in the menu.
