Nice--Who makes that 70 Chevy pickup model? That was my first car I ever bought. I wonder how many more people have models of the snowbirds, and not of them in their former livery--the MONON!

I like those "Snowboids", they used to come through here on the N&W/NKP trains from Sayre.

The Monon sent the big C628's back to Alco in '68 or so.
From what I understand, the road's president had a vision around 1963 that the Monon would become a coal hauler and would need appropriate power, and Alco had introduced "the most powerful single engine diesel-electric locomotive in the world" in the form of the C628, so what, 10? or so were bought, but the coal-hauler thing didn't pan out and the Big Alcos were sent back to Alco, who sold them rather cheap as they were too new to scrap but too old to appear in the builder's catalog, as they had been superseded by the C630 and C636.
DRLOCO, the '70 Chevy truck is (was) made by Malibu under the "Reel Rides" brand name, as I guess a Chevy Truck was in the movie "Dazed and Confused". It's somewhat dimensionally inaccurate, in that the cab (and vehicle height) is too high and the shortbed is too short, but it's great looking otherwise. The wheels and tires are incorrect for a 1970 model, but are accurate models of aluminum rims as used on post 1990 pickups, Blazer/Yukons, and Suburbans. Just paint them black and no-one would know; they'd look like steel rims.

I have a pair of the Stewart LV C-628's (one red, one white) that will be on "permenant" short term lease to the SPSL. Picked em up from a guy at one of our fleamarkets for $25.00 each. It would be a crime to pass em up at that price!

The 70 Chevy pickup is from Malibu International, from the "Dazed and Confused" collection. You can find them at Walmart or Target.

Favor to ask. Would it be possible to measure the width of the plate steel "walkway" that runs front to back on the very top of the unit in the center. That walkway was only used on non-dynamic versions of that Alco. I am modifying an Overland C430 to non dynamic brakes. It has that same plate steel walkway. I am unable to get info on that walkway. I have pictures, but tough to get an accurate guess as to it's width. So if you had a dial caliper or micrometer available for a quick measure, that would be greatly appreciated. The width should be roughly in the area of .180?. Dale in Badgerland

I got a different story from a friend who is a big Monon fan regarding the C628s that went to LV. According to him, the Monon ordered the C628 to replace the BL2s and FM H16-44s on a 2-1 ratio initially. They would eventually replace the freight service F3s as well with the RS2s being moved to secondary and yard assignments. The C628s were purchased without ever testing them, just sight unseen. The only 6-axle power the Monon had ever seen were B&O and MILW SD7s and SD9s who both utilized trackage rights over portions of the Monon. The SD7/9s posed no problem so Monon assumed the C628s would do the same. However, once on the road, the C628s were way too big for the light Monon rail. They were compared to a fat girl in ice skates. They had a bad habit of causing the rail to spread out from underneath them. I think they spent more time in the ballast than they did on the rail. Monon contacted ALCO about the problems and ALCO offered Monon the opportunity to return the C628s for something smaller. As the story goes, ALCO was in the process of building several C420s for LV at the time. LV had also just placed an additional order for C628s. ALCO offered the Monon C628s to fill the recent LV order. In return the recently completed LV C420s would be sent to Monon and a new batch of C420s would be started for LV.

Here are some Stewart Hobbies ALCo C628's that I finally snapped a few pictures of. They are not new to me, have had them for several years. But, the Snowbird Scheme beckoned.

Very nice units! I have the Atlas versions in N-scale. Unfortunately, the horns broke off and I need to get some replacements. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for?

I do love those Century 6's. Just wish I could justify a few on a California freelance set in the mid to late 80's. Also the Chevy can't really be a '70 with that grill. 71-72 had the mesh grills you see on your model. 69-70 had a grill with a horizontal bar in the center. I have a '69 fleet side short bed myself. The Alcos and the Chevy still look great together though?
