I recently found an old Atlas/Roco SD35; my question is, how well do they run? I was thinking of doing it as a Conrail unit that they got from the CNJ. I might put this in the Rescued Project section. TIA

These are very nice runners and were great for their time. They have scale width hoods, which was also a plus at that time considering Athearn had wide hoods. When Cannon came out with the cabs and then the sub-bases, it really made these engines look good. A little frame work and you have a nice model.

I built one last year. It's totally Cannonized.

Randy,
Great model! It looks like you improved the fuel tank area considerably, which really helps the look of the older Roco model. What were the steps and materials? Also, do you happen to know if the new Master/Silver series handrails can be readily backfitted to the Roco model?

I used an Atlas fuel tank. Those are the newer Atlas handrails.

Like I said, they look nice when rebuilt. Another nice unit Randy!

Randy, what if any modifications to the Roco cast metal tank did you have to do in order for the Atlas tank casting to fit ?

Randy, what if any modifications to the Roco cast metal tank did you have to do in order for the Atlas tank casting to fit ? I had to Dremel off most of the sides and some of the ends to get it to fit over. Needless to say, you have to remove the drivetrain first. I only did this because I had already started the project years ago. I wouldn't do it again, and if I did I would use a new Atlas frame from their parts department.

The two SD35 s are pretty good runners so if they fit your modelling era I'd rework them. I built one for MRL before I knew about Cannon or I would have changed out the front end. I used putty to fill in the screwdriver slot and added a couple details to the tank and moved on to the shell.

I would also replace that 25 year old Roco motor. Well, I'm beginning to get parts to start this project, anybody have any recomendations for a replacement motor?

Thanks for the reply Robert, I think I'll give the Mashima a try.
