I have an old (Roco from Austria) Atlas GP40. Perhaps the shell is not up to today's standards but it is a GREAT running locomotive and perfect for my son's first loco. It is painted for SCL and the paint seems fairly heavy. I am wondering if anyone has ideas on stripping. I have used all the old remedies in the past, alcohol, brake fluid, oven cleaner with some good results. Just wondering if anyone has experience with stripping these old (but very viable) locomotives.

On those old shells? I remember reading in MR that apparently brake fluid turns the Atlas shell to mush.
I'd suggest 91% or better rubbing alky.

Where can you find 91% alcohol? I can only find 70% in my local stores.

Walmart carries it, most supermarkets do also. If that doesn't work, your local drug store should have it.
