I know it is for venting but why the slot and not just the regular louvers is beyond me...

I've always heard it was for easy access to the battery terminals for cleaning.

They allowed the battery terminals to be cleaned when the locomotives were run through washers. Mark

They allowed the battery terminals to be cleaned when the locomotives were run through washers. Mark That is correct. It appears that a few Southern Railway GP38-2's had this feature too. Southern Mailslot

One, maybe two, orders of Southern GP38-2s had the mail slots and possibly one order of SD40-2s had them. There was others that had mail slots. I believe MKT and KCS had some. And of course the DRGW SD50s received them but they were tacked onto a Chessie order and built to Chessie specs. I believe there was some DRGW GP40-2s with mail slots as well.

The final order of Seaboard System SD50's (also built to Chessie specs) had them as did the 10 CSX SD60's.

I believe the only SD50s that were not ordered with the mail slots were the original units ordered by L&N (8500-8524). These were eventually refitted with mail slots. The mail slots became standard on all CSX units. Many were later refitted with them. I've even seen a couple GEs equipped with them. One even being a Dash-8.
