Can some kind soul help in figuring which Kato GP35 is the correct one for those the CN owned - all two of them... I know the GP35's went through a lot of "phases..." It's just which one is my starting point? Thanks

Based on a quick search, Kato only offers a phase 1a GP35. With all the extra work you'll have to do for the Canadian version (new steps, bell placement, etc.), it's probably close enough. That's my guess, anyway.

Here is a link to the phases of the GP35. It does not list the CN but on date built I would say it is a Ib with the 7 latched hood doors and no bulge under the cab headlight. Kato did the Phase I in the a, b and c. The last run was just the Phase Ia. You will have to watch the auction site to find a Phase 1b or 1c. I am not sure what phase the newer Athearn RTR model is.

Yep, I'd say James is right after some more research. All I saw at first from Kato was the 1a offerings, too...my bad.
Build dates of 8/64 are right in the range of 1b production according to the website he provided, plus the two louvers on the left side battery box are another spotting feature.
Good luck!

EMD and GMD GP35's did not go through the same phase evolution. GMD units retained early-phase details much later than EMD production, and never progressed to the straight underframe and narrow side sill of EMD units. I've posted phase details for both builders here (an expansion of the phases described by David Thompson): trainiax.net/mephase-emdgp35.phpHaving said that, CN's units had details consistent with the earliest (Phase 1a1) EMD GP35 production, including 7 door latches, a flat panel under the headlight, and a short inertial air intake. The main differences from a generic EMD unit would include the large Pyle headlights (on the nose at the front, and vertically oriented in the rear); the narrower vertical stepwells; the bell (and Nathan M3 horn) on the cab; square sand fill hatches; and rock deflector pilots.

Hi sorry for hijacking this thread. I have a S scale, American Models GP35 that I'm doing in CN (4001/9301) as it appeared in 1983 just near its last few years at CN . In researching I have come across a few other projects from others. I know it needs to be Canadian-ized, but I have noticed in a few pics that the dynamic fan has been removed. It is noticeable in the pic from Bill Thompson. If any one could verify this I would greatly appreciate it.
thank you Joe

Yes, dynamic fans were removed and plated over on various CN GP35's and GP40's.
