Good Evening,
I figured I'd make a thread rather than updating my primer all the time! Ive done some research on the model and its full sized counter part. I'm not positive but not only am I missing some pieces ( insulators and the like) it appears that they are also in the wrong spots too. That got me thinking, and having a 3D printer, I tried to make some of my own. The first one was a little rocky, but 1 view-block printed well and I tried it out. Little too short, but right angles, and proportions otherwise, of which I was pretty proud! Real measurements, to scale measurements, to mm all applied to a random 3d shape can be a little, well.... trial and error is the key there haha! My second print went a little better and the insulators and spark arrestors printed very well, but were WAY to small! Also a little chunky looking lol I just did quick models, not full detailed meshes etc.
Aside from that, the unit is not running very well - some trouble shooting is in order, be it the track or mechanical. I *think* its mechanical as my Tech III dims when both trucks are on the track but not when only one is touching the rail. my C-415 runs a little rough too, so it could very well be the track. Either way Athearn used SD-9s as the main chassis for this locomotive so that should be an easy enough replacement to find, if i need to.
First Print Pieces (most things didnt print, and only one view-block panel was good )
Second Print - Not useable viewblocks, but the small details printed. and looks great, but WAY too small. Each square is an inch for reference
The Test fit of the Third View block. Porprtions are right, but was a tad bit too short and didnt come all the way to the back.
All in all not a bad start and I've already stretched the view block, but dialing in the printer so it doesn't warp the piece like in the second print - has been challenging. and the angle of the slope could be tweaked slightly, but its not super obvious lol and YES my mind did drift to desiging my own E60 shell, so I can make a Desert Power, or BMLP, or just more than one... BUT one thing at a time rofl! but a 2 part print, and a mold, and some resin, sound pretty good tooooo :-P
