Anyone done a truck swap on the Lima/MRC/Rivarossi ALCO C420? The body detail seems pretty good, but the trucks leave something to be desired, and seem to have very different mounting than most manufacturers. I have a stash of Athearn and Roundhouse AAR B trucks, and the Atlas versions are reasonably cheap to get. Has anyone ever done this, and how did you do it? Can it even be done? Thanks!

I had an MRC C420 and eventually dumped it because the gears in the trucks were shot. If you're looking at doing something with sideframes, first check if the sideframes are integral to the gearboxes or if they hold the axle ends. If they hold the gearboxes, you may have to get creative attaching new sideframes.
As far as swapping trucks, you could probably cut out the bolsters and add new brass ones that match the Atlas/Kato trucks, or scrap bolsters off an Atlas frame and epoxy them into place. Although given the cast metal frame and other challenges with the MRC unit, I'd be strongly tempted to look for an Atlas C420.

NWSL still makes replacement gears for the MRC/Lima units, I'll probably just go that route...
