I've made springs by tightly wrapping brass wire around a suitable sized mandrel. Brake chain springs are in relaxed position when hand brake is off so no need to have space between the coils. Or buy the Cannon and Co. Brake chain tensioner parts and harvest the spring off of those.

i might have to try that! just kinda hard to imagine that you cant seem to get the same springs that intermountain used, they must have gotten them from somewhere right? i could use those springs on other ge locos as well. the springs on the scale trains c39-8 look suitable so i sent an email to them and am waiting for a reply. i guess i should have gotten the scale trains tier 4, only thing is the assembly quality was not very good on the first run.

What about using a spring from a Kadee coupler? I'm not at the bench to see how it looks...just thinking out loud. Maybe an N-scale centering spring?

thanks for the replies guys, but have any of you actually seen these springs? they are very tiny .025 spring body diameter and about .110 length and probably made with a wire diameter of .003. i really need these springs and like i said intermountain is not helping at all, it seems like they are dead in the water as they wont even answer with facebook messages. this is not very good to me when you spend 250.00 on a locomotive.

Probably Dave's suggestion about the N scale spring may give you what you need.
