Hello Diesel Detailer forum members:
My name is Mark and I just joined this forum on Friday. Let me first start by saying what a great site this is! I discovered the link in the Atlas forum and was thrilled to find all the great information posted here. The first time I visited, my eyes ended up burning because I spend such a long time reading post after post! I’ve already learned a lot of new information and can’t wait to try some of the techniques and products mentioned here.
A little bit about me: I’ve lived in Reading, PA all my life, so does anyone what to guess what my favorite railroad is? I started in the model train hobby just about the time the Reading Railroad declared bankruptcy and Conrail was formed. I wish I had the foresight back then to realize the significance of that time and had taken a lot of pictures, but unfortunately I was still pretty young and didn’t really start rail fanning until the mid 80’s. Some of my friends thought I was nuts to taking pictures of Conrail trains because the thought Conrail was never going to go away. Fortunately I didn’t listen to them! So, I have a nice collection of photos from that era and I plan to share them with you all whenever I can.
I’ve always been a stickler for details. Growing up, I was never satisfied with the “toy train set” level of detail my Tyco, Bachmann, or early Athearn trains had. I got pretty good at painting and decaling locomotives and rolling stock, but it all had to be put away when I started college. Fast forward a bunch of years and now I’m getting back into the hobby. Thanks to companies like Atlas and Kato, the detail level of most RTR locomotives is now light years ahead of the toys I had as a kid. The hobby has truly entered a renaissance age in all scales.
My model train collection is currently just that; a collection. I’ve been gradually buying and storing several locomotives for the day when I can start my layout.
Here is what I have in HO have so far:
Newer Athearn
GP35 RDG
SD45 PRR
Atlas
GP40-2 RDG Gold series (the nicest and most expensive locomotive in my collection by far)
GP38 PC
C424 RDG
Kato
SD45 RDG
Not a huge list, but I’m on a budget and trying to buy quality when I can find it at a good price. I would like to start detailing one of these diesels with a simple easy project that I can’t mess up. Any ideas on where to start? I also have several Atlas and Kato N scale locomotives, but it looks like most people here work in HO. The bulk of my hobby time has been spent building car kits from Bowser, Branchline, and even a few older blue box Athearn kits, but now I’m ready to switch and start detailing my diesels!
