Been working on my FWWR 2001 project, and finally starting to get it back together again. This is the first Cannon & co front section Ive done and having a problem. The unit I'm working on is from Athearn unit and ready to install the front and finding out that the cab is too tall. Have i done something wrong or is this normal. I guess i could sand the running boards down some more. But not sure what I've done wrong could also raise the roof for the inertia filter. The cab roof is approx .010 to above the current roof line. Was finally getting somewhere with this project and now frustrated again.

If you can shot a picture of it and post it we could probably determine exactly what you need to do....That would help out alot........

Once you install the Cannon dust bin on top it will even out.

Sorry nope. still too tall. Have been thinning out walkway to reduce hight and may add spacer beneath dust bin to compensate. Also it seems that the Cannon Dust Bin is too short in length. I cant seem to win

What locomotive is that? I've never had that problem. Cannon parts are not too short.

Its hard to tell the height of the lip, if its very small, id say leave it, if you raise the dust bin, youll have the issue of having the entire roof all the way back that will be off!

I agree, Wayne, if the difference is .010" or less, I would not change anything. To do so (such as adding a .005" styrene shim under the dust bin) may require altering the entire line of the car body. If the cab is not attached, you might try sanding the bottom edge, but that may be more trouble than its worth. Randy brought up a good point. Which Athearn is that? Cannon parts usually fit up good on Athearn.

Appears to be the GP-35. If you look it doesn't look like he cut or filed enough of the frame down before he glued the cab on. The sill looks kind of thick and is also wedge shaped, (thinner at the front than in the rear). I think the cab needs removed and more taken from the side sill. Look at my Rail Power SD-45 sill, it's thin. The Athearn GP-35 is the old Rail Power GP-35.

Ok guys this is a GP38-3 made from a GP35 here is a photo: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1421116To me it looks like the Cab roof should be level with rest of the roofline and the Dust Bin is slightly above this. The cab is not installed yet because of this problem. I have removed material to the seam am afraid to remove to much more maynot line up.

Wayne, like Randy says, it does appear the side sill is wedge-shaped in your posted photo, which could account for the cab height problem. Before removing any more material from the frame/sill, with the cab off, measure the thickness from front to rear to make sure you have evenly removed the material. For the cab to sit right, it must be level across the frame, from front to rear and from corner to corner. Best to measure with calipers, if you got one.
