According to Utah Rails, it was renumbered to 3240 in June 1980. Not a snoot... RRpicturearchives doesn't show anything for 8000 either, so this is as close to that time frame as they get. Photo from 12 Dec 1980.

Strange as the actual 8000 was a snoot in the 8000 fast forty series with a higher speed gear ratio for intermodal service.
So that pic really throws me off strange and no I do not doubt you at all.
Just was told all these years it was a snoot go figure.

Strange as the actual 8000 was a shoot in the 8000 fast forty series with a higher speed gear ratio for intermodal service. So that pic really throws me off strange and no I do not doubt you at all. Just was told all these years it was a snoot go figure. Read here: utahrails.net/articles/up-fast-forties.phpAnd here: utahrails.net/up-diesel-roster/up-diesel-roster-45.php#8000 was renumbered from 3240 in February 1976 when re-geared for 80 MPH operation. It, along with 3241->8001 and 3242->8002 were modified in-house from locos delivered in 1973. These units were renumbered back to 3240-3242 when the high-speed gearing was removed in 1980 and 1981. All three had 81-inch noses. The next group, 8003-8034, were modified from 3243-3274, built in 1974. All were renumbered back to their original numbers after the high-speed gearing was removed in 1980-1982. This group was equipped with 116-inch noses. The last group, 8035-8099, was factory-built for 80 MPH service in 1976, 1977, and 1979. The units were renumbered 3584-3608 and high speed modifications removed November 1980 through November 1981. This group had 88-inch noses.

yup seen that one but the 8000 just bugs me now with that standard nose. Thanks. And that is an interesting read on the 8000 series.
