A quick question here, on the Athearn DCC ready units, what would be the reccomended LED that I can install without/or a little soldering to replace the bulbs that come on the units already? Essentially just an upgrade with the minimal amount of work! Thanks guys!

A quick question here, on the Athearn DCC ready units, what would be the reccomended LED that I can install without/or a little soldering to replace the bulbs that come on the units already? Essentially just an upgrade with the minimal amount of work! Thanks guys! Well, this is to each their own. I will use both LED's and bulbs, depending on the idea I'm after. A friend actually builds lighting circuits that regulate the current and that way you never have to replace a bulb or worry about it. Now, I've been doing DCC installs since 1999. Back then I found a company that made bulbs of various sizes (grain or rice, wheat, sand) and they had built in resistors on them. They worked very well. I started using them on every install I did. 10 years later I still have engines that have yet to burn those bulbs out! They have many hours on them as well. The company sold the bulbs to model power. Look in the Walthers cat and find them in the lighting section and under Model Power. I kid you not! Buy a pack and test them out. Matter of fact, a good friend, we just installed a Tsunami in a Athearn Genesis F Unit and he is using them to light the headlight and mars light.

Thanks CIOR, After retrofiting 5 of the older blue box SD40-2's with the newer RTR motors, Was wanting to find the easiest way to add lighting off the circuit board without complicated resistors and soldering and such. Thanks!!!
