Today I am starting my D&H RS3m kitbash. Starting point is a Stewart RS3 Phase I kit. I cut a 4' section out of the roof of the long hood for the dynamic brake cabinet. The cut was made on a vertical line above the first door closest to the cab and went to the midway point of the 3rd door. I cut 2 scale feet off the sides of the short hood and 2 scale feet off bottom of the front of the short hood. Though the pictures don't show it, I sanded off the louver details on the short hood sides, the molded on grabs, door and headlight from the front of the short hood.

Side view of the cab. I added Cannon & Co number boards. 3/4 View of Cab. I sanded off the oval bottom protrusion on the number boards as the D&H RS3m did have them. Cut out the fromt windows from Cannon & Co cab and glued them in. Tomorrow I will fill the gaps with putty and sand some more.

Very nice start. I will be watching for updates on this project, as it is a favourite prototype. Even though it's not N-Scale (Sorry, can't help myself.) Cheers Steve NZ

Thanks for the replies. This project has been simmering for a number of years and I decided that I would jump in head first! That said, I debated about raising the long hood on this locomotive. Morrison-Knudson raised it about 6" in the rebuild in order to fit a 251 prime mover in it. That isn't very much and for the most part you can't tell unless you're really familiar with both the original and rebuilt locomotives. One telling signal however is the fireman's side walkway. You can see the walkway is raised so the handrail is not straight for the length of the unit. Well tonight I decided I would raise the hood 6" and we'll see how that works out. It wasn't quite as easy as just cutting the side hood in 2 parts because the radiator section of the rebuilds remained in their original position. So I cut my side hood section in three pieces as shown below. I'll be working on the splice, proper spacing and all that good stuff over the next few days.

Added the 6" spacer to door section of the long hood. For the radiator section I added it to the roof section for better mechanical stability. I reinforced the sections butt joints by backing with .015" styrene. There isn't a lot of clearance so I hope when everything is finished and fastened together that this will be solid enough.

Due to lack of time and a slow parts order, I haven't done much on this. I added an .040 piece of styrene over the number boards. I will have to still use some putty but this should make it easier. Also I fabricated my dynamic brake box. I am using a precision Scale #3905 Alco dynamic brake screen. It looks very similar to an RS-11 dynamic brake screen which I thought would be appropriate if not correct.

Did some test fitting today while deciding what the next step should be. I have see-through screen and an Alco fan blade so I think that will be the next addition. Not sure how I will accomplish this but that is part of the fun.

Looking really good... wish the same could be done in N-scale (not so easy to hack up a Atlas RS3 to add the 6" of extra height)...

Jerry, I don't think even with a magnifier I could measure 6" in N scale. Probably wasn't really needed in HO either, just testing my abilities.

This has taken shape quite nicely. I'm sure the extra height will show up nicely in HO.

Did someone mention N-Scale? Not totally correct, but I may rebuild it one day as WNYP 406. This was built about 30 years ago. Cheers Steve
