has anyone every used a laserjet printer to make decals? and what decal paper(clear)would be the best quality to use. Going to have my niece do some artwork for me and she works at kinkos, they have both types of printers but is it better to use a laserjet or the old inkjet, keep in mind this is new to me.

I have been making my decals at home on my inkjet. It has taken a trial and error period but I am getting the hang of it. I do remember reading some posts in other forums about using laserjets. If I remember correctly, an advantage was the way the ink is burned into the paper making it more crisp and waterproof. The decal paper is also different and costs more. I believe both Walthers and Microscale sell the laserjet paper but I don't know the cost. Whereas I can get the inkjet paper downtown at the Hobby Lobby (the closest thing I have to a LHS )

The reason they are telling you the laser paper is because if you use inkjet paper, it will melt and gum up your printer. If you have a colour laser printer that is awesome and would work wonders for decals. I usually trial print mine on paper and measure them for the correct dimensions adn adjust as necessary.

I made a lot of decals on an HP C84 Waterproof photo printer, it's ink was, water proof. The only disadvantage was the ink was KINDA waterproof. It wouldn't smear or bleed but if inproperly coated it would fade.
I made a first round of RailLink logos using a sheet of white paper, printing the logo, then trimming right along the edge of it, a time consuming prospect if you wish to print lettering.
I got frustrated and the C84 sat dormant for quite some time, and at the end of last year my friend gifted me an Alps MD5000. There was a shot print head, but I was able to print of some smaller letterings and logos (under a half of an inch) which got me looking for another one.
I was able to find a 2300 series for around $75 on eBay, and after a slight shipping issue Has done wonders for me! I cannot honestly say I would not suggest an Alps for anyone wishing to print decals. Theres a learnign curve to it, but if you can master it the results are very rewarding.
