I have been working on building a M&StL RS-1 for a time now.
Since the M&StL mounted a steam engine style bell in the middle and front of the long hood, the platform over the radiator shutters needed to be moved off to the side. This necessitated removing the shutters as Atlas did not have full height shutters under platform. After the platform was installed, I scratchbuilt the new shutters out of Evergreen plastic 1x3's.
This shows the body with the bell temporarily installed along with the marker lights. Also since the railroad had a canvas cover over one side of the side shutters, they installed an awning to hold the canvas covering over the shutters, this was also built using Evergreen plastic.
Body painted in the last scheme the M&StL used on the RS-1's. Bright Red body with various top panels painted black, on the engine I am going to do, only the cab roof was painted black.
Started placing the decals, on the engine I am doing the white stripe does not go around the cab, I will be doing another engine and on that one I will put the stripe on the cab.
Thanks for looking!

Way cool! Any chance you're following the method by Clark Probst to do your modifications? I've got two of these units that I've done a small bit of these mods for those (the bell and the markers). I'm acquiring a third unit that I'll tweak as well. I've been contemplating doing all the mods you've done but have had a hard time convincing myself to do them to painted models. Mine are in the multi-color schemes (pre 1956) rather than the Schroeder red. They're also moderately well down on my project list. Looking great Lyle Dowell

Lyle,
Yes I am following the Clark Probst methods, I found his PDF file on modifying the RS-1's when I did a google search on the M&Stl RS-1's and found it interesting and helpful in doing my engine. Clark did his modifications on the painted engines also, and they seemed to come out okay. But then again he is a very good modeler!

After some procrastination with selling my old house, moving, then trying to find everything and dropping the frame and breaking one of the trucks, I finally finished the RS-1. Atlas RS-1, in order to do the M&StL RS-1 a number of modification have to be done. Since the Louie installed their steam era bells on the hood tops as the frame mounted bells froze up in the winter, the walkway over the top radiator vent has to be moved to the side. After removing the walkway, you will find the venting has a dip in it so the entire vent area is filed away, the walkway moved to the engineers side and a new vent area is scratchbuilt. Also installed steam era markers on the long hood. Changed to vent on top of the cab to match the ones the Louie had. Painted the unit with Floquil Signal Red and decaled it with the later Shroeder era decals I got from Mark Vaughn (now available from Clark Probst). The Louie originally received their RS-1's in small batches and every delivery had a different paint scheme (some said picked by the office staff). After Sprauge was kicked out in 1954 they Louie standardized the paint scheme into the Red & White scheme as this unit.

Looks great. Who made the class lights? I'm getting ready to start on a couple of NP & SP&S RS just gathering parts.
