Anyone ever see the movie End of the Line with Wilford Brimley, Kevin Bacon, and Levon Helm? It's about two railroaders that take it upon themselves to grab a locomotive and head to Chicago to find out why their railroad got shut down. It's a great movie. The locomotive used in the movie was a former Missouri Pacific GP38-2. Here's some info: - Locomotive built as Mopac #900
- re-numbered #2051
- re-numered again as UP #2377 (as in the movie)
- Buzzsaws removed and Southland put on for movie
- sent back to HATX as 2377
- returned to UP and re-numbered to #1819
- re-numbered again and still in service as #319
Has anyone here ever built this locomotive as it was in the movie? Does anyone have decals to letter this unit as a Southland locomotive in the movie? I want to build this unit!!!

Randy, yes I have and actually have the VHS tape setting right here ( long story )
OK movie, although several issues strike me odd being a former railroader.

Looking at the movie cover, with them standing on the lead of the engine, many things are different from the engine in the picture. -No drop step on movie engine -Solid hand bar on front (no chain walk) on movie engine -horn moved over to engineer side above numberboard on movie engine -firecracker moved to center/conductor side of movie engine. -MU Cable socket on movie engine is below anticlimber -Movie engine has anticlimber.
I'd start looking long and hard at the movie engine there Randy, seems to be many variations on it. Not sure if the movie company wanted those changes or something happened. -

There are many movie covers and a google search doesn't show the same one I have. Its a shame too, because its pretty detailed. This is as good as you get!

I might have seen it once...did they "kill" the locomotive during the film?

They shot the locomotive and blew out the conductor's side numberboard. I'd like to just build it as a "Prop" to sit with my other units. UP pulled it out of a Dead Line for the movie, then it was returned to HATX, and later re-purchased by UP. The locomotive was still in the MOPAC scheme with a Southland Logo over the Buzzsaw on the cab. There was a rising sun on the left side of the logo. I have the VHS and the DVD.

The 2377 on the video cover is different then the one in the movie. If I can scan the cover I will. But the differences are major, dunno why.

Probably used a different unit for the cover. I found a site that said UP had these in a deadline when the movie was shot.

Randy, the cover shot is the same one in the other cover shots as well, as the same unit number. Its also a MOPAC engine. I just wonder if they didn't use the engine you pictured for the stunt scene and then this one for the other stuff.
Number boards are cheap to make....probably made up a few of them as well as duplicate engine numbers

interesting topic randy as I just saw on ebay another ho scale model from the movie runaway train with the wreaked front end from hitting a caboose and a figure standing on top of the loco,I had always wondered about that engine from end of the line which was a great movie to me

Another one with a HH GP-30 and a U boat was The Fugitive.

Here you go! It takes up the width of the cab side and goes from the bottom of the side window to the top of the compartment boxes. No copyright infringement, I made it myself.

I'm going to build my Southland unit as if the story had followed along with the ending of the movie. Thomas Clinton (Chairman of the Board) had put the stops on his son-in-law Warren Gerber's plans with going air freight and started a restructuring of the company. The new Southland Logo is a comprimise between the Chairman and the President of Southland. (A Warren Gerber Company) Mr. Clinton would have kept a vested interest in his "good friends" Shop in Clifford Arkansas and sent several re-furbished units to Mr. Will Haney and his partner Leo Pickett. So my Southland GP38-2 will have the new Southland Logo.
There were plans for a second movie, but I guess it wasn't in the cards.
