Guys, I recently picked up an Atlas Master GP 40 for really cheap. The problem is it has the non dynamic brake hatch, and of course I need one with dynamics. I've searched everywhere for one and had no luck. Would the one from Athearn BB series GP40-2 work? I'm still trying to learn about the differences in appearances between the standard dynamic vs extended range, that's why I was curious if the Athearn one would be somewhat prototypical. Any advice would be extremely helpful. Thank you, James.

The Athearn -2 dynamics are only correct for one side. Since it extends forward on the other side it will not work. Also, just because a dynamic hatch extends (weather on one side or both like most -2's), does not mean it is extended range either. Extended range options have an access door located on the blister. This door can be on only one side or both depending on the EMD model.

Deez... sorry but that simply is not true. There are examples of units having the blister extended on just one side, on both late GP40s as well as the Dash-2s while others, even among the same group, have the blister extended on both sides. The following are some links to GP40s that have the blister extended on both sides... DRGW 3088DRGW 3093B&O 4000B&O 4001What is more, you can find GP40-2s with the blister extended on just one side, adding to the variety that you will find on prototypes... why some were and others weren't... its hard to say, but it did occur.

jp, have you contacted Atlas directly? Sometimes (emphasis on *sometimes*) Atlas has a part stashed away that's not listed on their webstore. Perhaps a damaged loco, etc., might have a part you can use. If you've already called, then ignore this Lyle

Jerry, those late Gp/SD40-45 units with forward farring dynamics on both sides are '71built EMD's not -2's. James asked if an Athearn GP40-2 dynamic would fit his GP40. I jokingly replied "only on one side" because the engineers side of the GP40-2 dynamics is the same as a GP40's. The earlier GP40-2's anyways as in Athearns example. The conductors side is not the same as it has forward farring. From what I read in what James is asking he might be confusing the forward farring for extended range witch are two different things also. The door that is on any forward farring dynamic blister that is hinged only and swings up is the contactor door. The latched flat or protruding door is the extended range option.

You might want to read my post again, I never said that the units I linked too were Dash-2s.

Mark, Jerry, thank you both for the help. I've been on the railroad for a while now and honestly have never paid much attention to the outward appearances of dynamics. This is most helpful.
Lyle, I havent yet, but I will, I may luck up. The cheap price tag on that engine was enticing, but I never thought running down that part would be such a PITA. thanks again guys, James.
