Guys, here is another F-unit I completed just this week. The 1610 was built from a Highliner shell and powered with a Kato/Stewart F-unit chassis. The fuel tank was custom built, the truck sideframes were detailed along with the remainder of the shell. Rick Bell at DCCInstalls installed the DCC decoder and the sound unit. Enjoy!! Bob

My favourite F yet! Bravo! Thank you Sean. I truly enjoy building F-units especially now since we have the Highliner shells to work with. I haven't run into any situation where there was a railroad that couldn't be modeled when using the Highliner shell and the quality fit of all the detail parts that come with these shells is unbelievable. Fantastic!! Bob

Here is the engineer's side of the 1610. The open mu door is a detail that I've been adding to the F-units I've been building lately and it seems to add a bit of pizzazz to the front end of the model. There is a mu connector inside the door. Bob

Bob,
Well done model. What are you douing to create the MU door? Are you making it from shim stock or styrene?
Do you have a before paint pic you can share?
Thanks! Brian

I did not care too much for F units plus most left the scene a little before my modeling time frame. But Bobs work with these models is so talented and inspiring that I have learned to appreciate these diesels and their time period allot more. This just another example of something so nicely done it's hard not to like these models. Awesome Bob!

Bob, Well done model. What are you douing to create the MU door? Are you making it from shim stock or styrene? Do you have a before paint pic you can share? Thanks! Brian Brian, the Highliner kit contains a very nice mu door in the details bag. What I do is put a very small drop of GOO on the back of the door and place it in it's correct position on the nose. I then give the GOO a few minutes to dry and when dry, use a NEW # 11 X-ACTO blade to very carefully trace the outline of the door onto the face of the shell. Next, remove the door and scrape off the GOO. Now drill several #67 holes inside of the door traces you made and then very carefully connect the holes with the #11 blade being sure to make the two curves at the bottom of the door. Next, cement a section of .030" x .030" styrene across the top of the hole so you'll have something to ACC the top of the door to. Position the door in place and allow to dry. Bob

Fantastic modeling Bob! I really enjoy seeing you post and am always eager to open the thread and view your latest work...man'o man, this does not disappoint! The added details, esp. the open MU door, are excellent. However, I have to give the biggest high-five to the weathering. It looks really nice. It seems as though your weathering has been stepping up over the last several models I've viewed from you. Whatever path you're on in that regards...stay on it! There seems to be more fine detail in it and I love that. I anxiously await your next photon reflector already!

Bob,
Did you corner the market on Highliners shells? This one looks great as well.

Bob, Did you corner the market on Highliners shells? This one looks great as well. Jimmy, I have my fair share of Highliner kits and Stewart chassis' stored away for future use, but my friend that I build these for always supplies me with the Highliner kits out of his stash. Bob
