So today I was finishing up my C40-9W...i started painting and it just slid off the side of the engine...i was guessing i put to much thinner in it. So i poured another can with less thinner and it was grainy. I'm guessing I am just not finding the perfect ratio right?

Enamel. The reason I asked is the other side went on perfectly without and problems...

A "grainy" finish can also be caused by the paint drying before reaching the surface. Too much air pressure and/or too far back from the surface will do it almost every time. Robert gave some sage advice: always stir, never shake, your paint to mix it.
When spraying, enamels handle best at 15-20psi, while acrylics work best between 20-25psi. Experiment with some scrap plastic, adjusting your pattern for good coverage and (this is very important) watch your paint/thinner ratios. Always start with those recommended by the manufacturer and use medicine droppers to accurately measure your mix. Keep notes of your mixes when blending colors.
