Here's a project I've been working on and off on for a few evenings over the last couple of months. For some reason I saw it last night and picked it up again. Its going to be a CN 7100 when I'm finished with it. For those than don't know, CN took a small number of SW1200RS's in the late 1980's and rebuilt them with a shortened GP9 long hood and remotored (?) them in Montreal. I'm using a mix of Athearn Blue Box GP9 and SW1200 parts as well as a Kaslo GP9 long hood and a Cannon cab. Most of the other parts are either Miniatures by Eric or Juneco. The rear cab wall was made from splicing two ICG SW14 rear cab wall kits together. No timeline for this one as I'm just friggen' around with it. Could be a while.

No timeline eh?! You'll have it painted in a week...

No timeline eh?! You'll have it painted in a week... ''Painted" and "finished" are two different things. I really need to sit down and order some handrail stanchions in the near future. Even found a source for the L style found on MLW's. Besides, I've got parts in transit for some more pressing projects....

I might have a pair of those etched numberboards. Lemme check... And actually, you've chosen the Eric numberboard cluster on the back, and that style was only on 7101 IIRC. The rest had the older 1200 style (Rzasa part) I think CN crews preferred the stairs rather than steps, so they drew units from the lower series to r/b into sweeps. 7101 was probably a unit in the high 1200s, low 1300s before they changed the stepwells. www.railpictures.net/images/d1/6/4/0/8640.1265826800.jpgI might have a spare one of those too...

Thanks. Let me know. Never even thought about the numberboards. I am thinking about class lights though..... I thought all the 7100's had steps as opposed to stairs though....?

These are beautiful and interesting locomotives which loan themselves to being freelanced as other types of rebuilds, even with a usable DB. Have often looked at them (and the ATSF "Beep") as possible examples of more modern repowerings which could go so far as being of use on branchlines and the lesser mainline trains and assignments. Thanks for sharing your efforts!!!

SNIP>> Even found a source for the L style found on MLW's.<< Do tell! From Luc Nowlan... www.specialshapes.com/angles.htmlI could never find a brass angle part small enough from any manufacturer until he stumbled across this a couple months back. They'd have to be cut to lenght and drilled though.

There's the beginnings of a custom frame visible in the second photo. Everything is cut to size but I ran out of square brass tubing and broke the tip off my soldering iron trying to replace it after using the same tip for way too long (love Mastercraft lifetime warranties)so I'll probably have made some progress on the frame tomorrow.

Pretty well finished the custom frame this morning. I'm happy with the ride height.

Come to think about it, I could have filed this one under the Cheap Builds category. All in I don't think I'd have $45 into this so far. Very happy with how the paint turned out.

Wow Taylor, another gem! I can see the HR to the left, and the sides are straight as an arrow now!

Wow Taylor, another gem! I can see the HR to the left, and the sides are straight as an arrow now! I KNEW you'd say that right after I noticed it in the photo off to the side. The frame shimming really took the warp out of it, and the side that's visible was warped the worst.
