Hi At long last I've finished something. Here are some photos of one of Alco's DL-202 Black Maria cab units. An A-B-A set hit the rails in 1945 to field test the "new"241 prime mover. They were scrapped in 1947 and the 241 engine canned in favour of the unproven 244. Cheers Steve

Hi Jerry The UM-20's do look cool, like an Alco FA-1 with corrugated sides and an NSWGR 43-class front. I suspect there is an Aussie kit for the 43 class, so maybe possible to kitbash one.
Zsolt made a great job of the Black Maria shell. I have another A-B set, but don't know if I will complete them, too many other projects to finish. Cheers Steve NZ

Crackin' job Steve, on a rare and historic model. Makes a guy wonder, if that 241 may have been a decent prime mover.... The 244 is one of my favorite sounds on Earth, but for the 1:1 crews who dealt with them, they had serious "teething pains"!! You did a great job. For ANY scale (especially N!), it's impressive! It does make me think though, if ALCo designers didn't poke around the EMD design studio whilst designing that body!!!

Hi Pacbelt Thanks for the nice words. The nose on the DL-202 was a shortened version of the Otto Kuhler design from the DL-109, with a three window arrangement, which doesn't show up very well in the photos.
The 241 vs 244 debate is probably still going on. I suspect the 244 would have benefitted from some serious road testing before being sold. The latest mods to the 244 made it a pretty good prime mover, but it certainly wasn't in the beginning. The D-L's Alco Doc is keeping 5 operational RS-3's running sweetly in Scranton, wish I could see them running. Cheers Steve NZ

G'Day Steve (I don't get to use that often!) Yeah, that debate will go on for many more years... Still, to me, nothing sounds sweeter than a 244!! I've never heard a 241... were they straight sixes too? I'm a little closer to Scranton than you may be... but I still haven't been there either! Cheers, Carmine

The Black Maria had 1500hp V-12 prime movers per Wikipedia.
