Hey guys! Im doing a model of MRL SD45-2 304 using the athearn genesis model. Im on the last of the detailing and about to change the numbers to 304, and am wondering what the detail is on the middle of the cab between the 2 antennas. Im hoping these links post, so, here we go! www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=198157&nseq=1 www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=195133&nseq=3. To me, it looks almost like an old strobe light bracket, and I thought about using the DW part and sand it down a little bit to simulate it. Any thoughts? Thanks! Eric R.

Hard to tell from those pics, I would say it was something the previous owner had installed that got cut off with a smoke wrench.

A strobe light is a good guess. I searched all the roads that it was owned by previously but couldn't find any good roof shots. Maybe Brian will know what it is/was.

I looked at them in Clinchfield, Seaboard/Family Lines/CSX and only saw whip antennas in that location. Some of these were owned for a short while by HATX so there could have been Strobes at that time. Here's an interesting pic. csx.history.railfan.net/gallery/cr8969bs.jpg

Go to this web site roofer madness www.trainweb.org/zeniphotos/roofer/roofermadness.htmlGo to the bottom of the page and click on page 4. There is a down on cab roof shot of an MRL SD45. The feature is not in the same location as your SD45-2, but I do believe it is the same feature you are looking for which is three mounting brackets for a strobe light. Very clear shot of it.

That's where to horns used to be located when it was a Clinchfield unit.

Here is another roof shot that is fairly clear and it does look to be the same strobe brackets. This one is on locoPhotos www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=62971I think this photo and the roofer madness site I posted should clear up your question without any doubts.

Yep, they removed the horn and relocated to the long hood and put a strobe light up there and then changed practices and removed the strobe light.

Thanks Brian, been lookin all over the place for some pics and I didnt even think of checking "roofer madness"! I think im going to use the DW strobe light bracket, sand it down a bit, that should make a reasonable match for it! Thanks guys!
