After observing photos of many prototype Alco RS-3s, it becomes quite apparent that the only production phase shell offered on RTR models is the phase 1. However, many railroads had other phases of RS-3s (phase 2 and phase 3) which have visually noticeable differences that aren't easily overlooked. Luckily Stewart Hobbies, now a part of Bowser Trains, makes a kit for the body, walkway, and other related components. Unfortunately, it was designed to fit onto a frame and drive designed by Athearn.
Now to my main question, does anyone know if the Stewart Hobbies shell will fit onto either an Atlas or Bachmann RS-3 frame and drive? If yes, what modification is necessary to make the new shell fit?

Hi Blane,I know you can mount the Stewart shell on an Atlas drive, but you have to remove the strip on the bottom of the walkway or it will sit too high,Bill Darnaby had an article on doing this in MR maybe early 90s? Dale

I've built an RS3 using the roundhouse chassis and deck with the Stewart hood, and nose. I always thought the stewart looked correct due to the more rounded hood, as the atlas looks to squared off. I ended up using the MDC cab, but like most cabs, it didn't hang 1" over the sides of the sill like the prototype so I had to cut it down the middle and add some styrene. I also had to add some styrene strip to the chassis to make a more definitive frame rail.

Blane,
I have used the Stewart RS3 shell for two models both Central of Georgia units acquired by Southern. The Atlas Classic I had to do a lot of filing of the weights. This was a major job just using hand files and a Dremel. I did use the Atlas walkway with the with the Stewart body though as I thought it looked better than the multi piece Stewart.
You might wait as I have heard these are in the pipeline for upgrades by Bowser.

I looked up the article by Bill Darnaby and found that it was only a mention of using the shells by Stewart without any mention of what drive the shells were mounted too. To be fair it was part of an article about motive power for his Maumee Route.
When you say that they plan on upgrading the model, do you mean they plan on upgrading the shell and components and making it a full model with drive and everything? Or that they plan on upgrading the shells and continue to sell those as a kit or maybe even an assembled carbody? Still I think it'd be good if the separate shells were kept in the catalogue regardless

I believe the plan is for an upgrade and placed into the executive line which means new chassis and the works. I would say the shell kit s will be around still.

It will be interesting to see how those models look. Does anyone know if the Bachmann drive will accept the Stewart Hobbies shell with minimal modifications?
