I'm in the process of modifying an Atlas O scale mp15dc into an sw1500. I'm trying to improve the radiator area with new grills and better cores. I looked at tons of photos online and it's evident that there are are several different types, shapes, and configurations of cores underneath the wire mesh. Some are symmetrical, some are not. The Athearn undec picture on their website shows the asymmetrical style.
Does anybody know anything about this? Why which core was chosen at which time. Is there a standard for as built, and then variations are a product of shoppings and rebuilds? A change in regulations at a certain date a la clean cab nose lengths?
Any insight, plus drawings or plans of course, would be greatly appreciated. Or does anybody have good closeup pictures of the improved Athearn radiator core with the mesh removed.
Thanks, Jim
