Neato! I've wanted to build one of those, but I didn't know if one should stretch the atlas car or shorten & narrow the Walthers car.

Wow, very impressive! That goes for the scenery as well. Does somebody make those trucks, or did you modify some commercial ones?

Thanks Dale! Since the Atlas cars are metal, I opted to go the Walthers route, as I'm much better with plastics than I am with metals. Sectioning the car was rather easy. After I got through with the build and halfway into weathering, I saw some of these for sale on Shapeways.com!
Thanks Adam, much appreciated! Glad you like the scenery. I handmade the pines a few years back, and all the other trees are Super Trees with a mix of WS ground foam and Scenic Express Super Leaves added for variety. The trucks are from Kadee. These came with semi scale wheels.
If you all like, I'll post up some build pics if I can get Photobucket to cooperate.

I would like to see that, I did try these back in the 90s when they came out but I just removed the stake pockets & didn't narrow the car or remove grabs, didn't come out good.

Where's the model? All I see are prototype photos. ;-)

Was the original shape of side sill on these the same as the Atlas cars?

No, the Walthers car I started with had just a fishbelly design. I filed it down and added the curvatures.

Oh no, I mean the prototype. I haven't been able to find an older picture. It looks like it was damaged/modified at some point, unless it just had a really weird shape to begin with.

The proto cars came like that, at least from what I've been able to find in my research. Yahoo Groups was a helpful place to find pictures and information.
