I know earlier versions of the RTR C44-9W/AC4400 ran better than the blue box due to the plastic worm gear, but they still weren't great runners yet. I was told that the new motors would be very smooth and this Friday I found out that is true as a friend at club had a brand new -9 in CNW livery. Still no Kato, but I didn't feel the need to crack the shell and rip out the motor.
Fitting a Genesis motor-or any other into a BB/RTR -9 means getting the Dremel out to get the motor to be in line with the gear towers, other wise the splines are at an angle which in this model isn't good.

New motors? I hadn't heard anything in the usual places to suggest Athearn was installing a different motor in their RTR line...

My original issue blue box runs very smoothly, but they were still being made in the US then. The only change I made was to hardwire because it has been Digitraxed.
