I am pondering doing an N Scale UP SD60M upgrade to an Atlas shell. It appears that one of the items that I will need to add to make this model more accurate is the raised walkway detail ahead of the blower. I have looked to see if this exists as a detail part but as expected, I have not been able to find. I am an absolute beginner at this so am not even sure how I would go about fabricating parts such as this in Nscale. Is there a 'Scratchbuilding 101' thread on this site that I should start with or any other guidance that you might have? Thanks, Will

Do you have a link showing what you are talking about? In checking SD60 pix I can't find anything that is raised in front of the blower... so a photo link would be a great help.

That's an elongated electrical cabinet air filter box. I'd just use some styrene strip to make that. The walkway guard is the challenge.

Yeah, from what I can tell, there are several phases of UP SD60Ms. Some of the major differences are the door configurations and the walkway details ahead of the blower. I ordered a book on the SD60 series which I am hoping will shed a bit of light on the different configs. In the meantime, I guess I should study up on how to do up the walkway guards. I'm guessing I could have them photo etched, but given that this will be at detailing a loco, I'm not sure it is worth the cost. Thanks for the inputs guys. Will

What is interesting to me is that there are shots of other locomotives numbered below and above this unit that has nothing at all like it... The SD60s were renumbered in the early 2000's. They were not renumbered in sequential order. There appears to be 8 different orders of the SD60Ms, The locomotive in question appears to be a mid production unit while the surrounding numbers are all from the first production group. utahrails.net/up-diesel-roster/modern-index.php

I have another question on this model. I am pretty well convinced that the 3 rear fans are 48" fans but I am having some issues with the front fan size. I have seen conflicting info on the web - some say the front fan is 60" while I've seen just as many references to the front fan being 52". Does anyone know the correct size? Also, where in the heck does one find the info on something like this. I've done LOTS of searches and yet no definitive answer.

I believe that 60" is correct... having a fan just 4" larger than other available fans would not make much of a difference and really could have used a 48" fan to get the same results.
