Hi-
Looking for insight or tips (any pictures would be great) on modifying a BB SW7 with the dynamic brake box on top with top mount air tanks ... I have started down the road and modified the hood to accommodate the dynamics and I enlarged the fuel tank and my dynamic brake unit itself looks pretty acceptable. Topside it appears the tanks would hinder the use of those 'topside' doors, are those doors eliminated or ? Getting the proportions of the air tanks to 'look right' using stock size tubing (as well as the end caps) are also a stalling point. This is an older kit with metal sideframes...I have the old Juneco flexicoils to use and have modified the trucks, but the tops of the sideframes look mighty close to hitting the chassis...if I had more resources I would 'liberate' my SW1500 flexicoils, but am reluctant to do so given the scarcity of finding Athearn parts without cannibalizing whole units...any ideas or suggestions would be helpful to get at least this off the pile of half-done projects.

the juneco flexcoils are a little tight, but if you look at the frame ends, on most units with flexcoils, the tapered angle was reshaped and a bit smaller than on the Athearn unit. Also on the bottom of the Athearn frame, there is a ridge that runs the length of the frame, close to the outside edge, this can be sanded down, to eliminate any contact withy the trucks. I believe the hood doors are still there, just requires more work when major maantance is required. Do a search for CANFOR, Canadian forest products sw units, there are some good photos on line with the roof tanks, fuel tanks, trucks and dynamic box

LV Historical Society has SW dynamic brake details for their SW8 modeling, if it's any help.

Thanks for the tips on using the Juneco side frames and relieving the bottom of the Athearn frame. I have the CanFor photos downloaded for reference and the top doors appear to fit so well they look invisible...I am trying to use commercially available tubing (both plastic and metal) for the air tanks and I guess I just need to tweak the length so the proportions look correct; after all, the Lionel Alaska switcher is as much of the inspiration as the actual prototypes.
FYI- the LV SW8 'pups' were different, they incorporated the brake fan and resistor grids pretty much into the hood body next to the cab
thanks for the help

there are 2 choices for the dynamic housing, there is one on shapeways, if you search tr5 dynamic brake, you will i,the other option is the out of product trackside parts SW dynamic brake kitpm m if you have any questions about dimensions, I have both

I've tried to find the TR5 dynamic brake housing mentioned on Shapeways and I can't get anything to show up. Am I missing it or is it no longer listed?
