Guys, i'm currently modeling the FWWR here in No Tx. After buying the new Athearn FWWR GP50's i have just found out that they are trading in the original 2009 which is a GP50 and replacing it with a GP40-2 (an ex SP 7250).Have not seen unit will be in Fort Worth tomarrow and hope to photo it. What would be a better many to use for a build, Athearn or Atlas makes a GP40-2. Looked the ex sp unit on line and it has a angled blower unit but have not seen in person yet. ANy help would be appricated.

What is a free-flower blower unit. They all look flower free to me! Matthew

Matthew,
I would go with the Atlas model as a starting point, just my personal preference as all of my locomotives, save 4 life-like GP38-2's are Atlas, the detail changes will be the same on the Atlas or Athearn unit as Anthony mentioned no matter which one you chose

I would also suggest the Atlas GP40-2.
BUT,
What phase is the new FWWR GP40-2? If it is a late phase, you may want to wait till Atlas releases that one. It is my understanding that they are going to produce the late phase GP40-2 with the notched step well. If it is not a late phase GP40-2, then the current Atlas run will do fine.
My reason for suggesting the Atlas model. Much better mold detail. Everything look better on the Atlas model. Also, the model sits at the correct height off the rail. The Athearn model sits to high off the rail. The down fall of the Atlas model is its truck side frames. But, this can be fixed by using the DW frame adapters I designed.

What are the main differences between the phases to keep aneye out for. Ran into the same problem on the current units that im working on. The more photos that i take the more different details that i notice. Currently working on units 2000, 2001 and 2003.

If you look at the pics I posted earlier you can see what I am talking about...
The later phases have radiator grills that are corrugated as compared to the early engines having the chicken wire grills.... The last phase has Q-fans over the radiator compartment where the earlier phases have the regular flat top fans..... The last phase has the free-flow blower as the earlier phase has the regular blower behind the cab on the conductor side.... The later phase have a quiet exhaust hatch as the earlier ones have the regular exhaust hatch..... And maybe the last spotting feature is that the later phases have a straight side sill compared to the earlier ones that have the step in the side sill ....................
The picture I have included is the new FWWR GP40-2.If you follow what you see there I am sure you will have it right, but i would still wait for it to show up in Ft.Worth and get some pics for yourself.
Cannon makes the parts you will need to model the last phase GP40-2 and if you wait for Atlas to come out with theres I am sure you might only have to change the blower out and regular fans to Q-fans.If you have anymore questions please ask...

I really like that paint scheme alot and it sure would look good a couple of SD50's or SD60's and probably better on a wide cab....Only dreams right now.....

OK guys after locating this unit got some shots. This unit must be a late GP40-2 all the things that Anthony said I noticed on this unit. Any idea when Atlas may be producing the Late model might be. Also this has a front porch that will need to be added. Need to start a parts list for this unit to figure what will need to be changed. Also anybody know of a source for Q Fans does Athearn have them as parts for the new GP50's?

And some people saw you cannot have two loco with the same number on the same railroad. Wonder how many people would notice this on my layout.

Look at the odd light placement on rear of the long hood, on the front 2009. Looks like a enlarged SP light package.

Yes the light package is an ex-SP package, and if you look closely the front of the old 2009 is missing handrails as they where used to repair other engines with broke end rails.I believe the original 2009 is already out of service and the new 2009 is getting ready to be placed into service.....If you look at the NREX photos above you can see that now that FWWR has this engine the a/c is missing and horn is moved.
Post your photos when you can Wayne...if you need any help locating parts or need help with a parts list let me know and I can drum one up for you....
