All , Is there anyone here who happens to be Physically Handicapped or have encountered someone who is Physically Handicapped? Or is one normal. The reason why I am asking is I encountered a few in my previous model railroad club who were either ignorant, intolerant, prejudice possibly uneducated on the special needs person and did not want anyone who is of that caliber in their club. Please feel free to comment.

I meant your former club not wanting to allow a special needs/handicap person to join. That's what I meant by sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. Didn't mean to offend anyone here.

To all,
To inform you I am Handicapped, a Special Needs person. My right side is effected with a mild case of CEREBRAL PALSY, over the years I have learned to accept all challenges physically or mentally placed in front of me ! One of the few reasons why I became involved with model railroading was to keep some of my Dexterity in both of my hands and to learn about our own history-U.S. A. history.- I apologize if I offended anyone here .
Tom
We should give each other challenges everyday. Who ever has the most tasks accomplished at the end of the week receives a prize!

I have severe nerve damage in my left arm and chest, but I don't consider myself "special needs" at all.
Still, I find discrimination OF ANY KIND abhorrent.
I think you find intolerant people everywhere you go and model railroading groups are no exception.
We do seem to have more than our fair share of curmudgeons, however...
I hope your future with such groups is a much brighter one.
The few groups I have been associated with have all been friendly and inclusive.

I have a severe lung disorder if that counts, been disabled since 2006 and I know the feeling about getting discriminated against when I park in a handicapped space. I am not in a wheelchair so people assume I am perfectly fine but what they dont know is under my clothes I have a small IV pump that pumps meds into my heart and into my lungs 24/7 and any long distance or fast walking makes my O2 levels drop down to around 70%.

I suffered frontal lobe damage 2 1/2 years ago, after a cardiac arrest. I was out 7 minutes before CPR started and 20 minutes before they got my heart started. After being without oxygen that long I could (should?) have been totally incapacitated.
I was very lucky... it ultimately allowed me to take medical retirement because I wasn't able to resume full duties at work after two years of trying. So yes, I have a disability although you might not notice it.
Otherwise I'm in good health now and it doesn't affect day to day life much, other than having a flaky short term memory and recurring headaches.
Aside from giving a great deal of pleasure, I feel my hobby and my little business, Eastern Road Models, will definitely help in repairing some of the damage.
I think lots of us have disabilities of one type or another, or will unexpectedly find themselves with one in the future. It all boils down to basic manners, and giving people a chance. Lots of "People of that Caliber" are extremely talented and capable individuals.
Try not to let those jerks at the club get you down, Tom. I hope you've found a more welcoming group, or at the very least you are able to enjoy the hobby at home and with a circle of friends.

I see that you are from Glens Falls. I belong to Upstate M R Club. We meet on Wednesday nights, in the basement of the dinner&movie, on Glen St., across the alley from Davidson's Brewery. I'm sure that you would be welcomed. In fact, one guy uses a wheelchair. There is an autistic guy too, so you can see that we don't discriminate.
If you can't do stairs, we have a bell. Sometimes the door to the elevator is locked, but someone will let you in.

I myself am disabled i use a service dog and have had clubs tell me no go because im a lieability. I'm not familiar with the laws in Canada, but in the United States the "Americans with Disabilities Act" applies to private clubs too, unless the meet certain criteria for exemption:
Q / Myth: All private clubs are exempt from ADA compliance.
FALSE: Only bona fide private clubs that are open to only members and their guests, do not regularly hold public events and are tax-exempt under the Internal Revenue Service’s 501(c)(7) code are exempt from ADA regulations. In addition, any club, no matter what its status, can be subject to litigation over the issue of exemption, whether or not the club ultimately prevails on that issue.
Since model railroad clubs usually have open houses, one could argue that they don't qualify for the exemption - especially if they aren't a 501(c)(7) [social club].
Granted, threatening to bring down the weight of the law on a club isn't the ideal way to gain membership, but sometimes people need to be politely reminded that liability fears can be easily addressed in membership agreements, whereas legal liability for blatant discrimination can be costly and generate months of negative press coverage.
