Hi Guys, Looking for advice on a starting point to model an HO ATSF U28CG. I am trying to stay away from an Athearn U28C fatboy shell. I know that a U28CG is basically a U28C with a steam generator added behing the cab. I thought about an Atlas U30C and changing radiators etc, Any advice would be appreciated and thanks. Shuttleman

U28CG uses the early-production U28C body, if I recall correctly, because they were all built in '66. The Atlas U30C shell is not correct as it models a late-phase U30C, but the underframe would be usable and give you a smooth Atlas drive. The best approach would be to kitbash and lengthen a Proto U28B shell. You may be able to use the U30 shell for some of the needed length. The U30C's sill and handrails will likely be usable as well. Here's a pic of the prototype for you: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=275025

This isn't going to be an easy kitbash. You really only have 2 choices for the radiator. First would be the old Athearn U28C. This would require narrowing the hood which is not an easy under taking. It will also require lots of etched detail parts to bring it up to the level of detail of the P2K shell. The P2K U28/30B shell would be your best bet. The shell is actually pretty nice. However, if you plan on splicing it with the Atlas U30C shell, watch out for the difference in hood heights. Over on one of the email lists I'm on, the possibility of kitbashing a U28C from the P2K and Atlas shells was discussed a while back. I can't remember which one was taller or which one the correct height. I just know they were different. It might be possible to splice 2 or 3 of P2K shells together and drop them onto the Atlas walkways. I'm no expert on the U28CG by any means, but it looks like the chassis will have to be lengthened. So you're going to need to figure out where the extra length comes from. Just from a quick glance, it looks like the battery boxes behind the cab are much longer than normal and the engine room has been pushed back really far. It looks like the steam generator compartment is mounted right behind the cab. You might be better off just nabbing a brass model from Overland.
