Hello All! So this will be my first big build. I have added a few grab irons before on other models. Anyway. I'm am taking an undecorated Athearn BB shell and replacing just about everything I can find. haha First up was removing the molded on radiator grill use on early GP40's in favor of radiator screen RS1403 from cannon and company. Next step is to remove the cab, cab base, and nose, I will also be replacing those with cannon and company parts. Since this is my first build I think I ma going to try and replace about everything I can think of, primarily for practice, also this project is really good to do in my dorm room as it doesn't take up to much space. click here -->( link) to look at the pictures (I don't know how to/if I'm able to upload pictures here) *update, figure it out* Thanks, Let me know what you think!

Looking good. I´m also new to kitbashing locomotives and my first big project has been building a GP38-2 unit using a Proto 2000 shell and Atlas drive. Now it´s almost finished, need to paint the fuel tank and to put lift bars and ditch lights. How have you cut the radiator grills?
Keep on posting updates of your project.

Looking good. I really like the Cannon parts. Before you assemble the cab I recommend reading Brian Banna's Cannon cab tutorial.

Another update, this project has allowed me some great relaxing time while at school. Cut off then replaced cab and nose off of shell, replaced with Cannon and Company parts. Got the SP spilt doors for the cab sub-base, and the proper 88' nose. I got the Plano Products radiator fan plate, and installed cannon fan bases, but I still need to glue the brass plate down, would crazy glue work for that? Right now all have us testers plastic cement. My construction is still a little sloppy, definalty some glue marks and scratches, but I'm hope weathering will blend that all in. I have also started installing some grab irons, but will need to get some new drill bits. Still thinking about how I will do the pilots, when I should start gluing pieces in relation to priming and painting. Any thoughts?

Going good for a first full detail. Here is a couple of things I see, first, you ahve the dynamic brake hatch on backwards. Before you glue anything else on I would do the work on the pilots so nothing get broke off while you are doing that.
You need to get come CA or super glue (I use Loctite myself) for gluing metal parts to plastic. Get all your cutting done first then add parts once your shell is all ready for that.
Keep moving on as your on the right track.

Hey everyone; Thanks for the input! Nothing has happened as school has been keeping me extra busy (aside from reversing the dynamic brake hatch, and installing the fan hatch). Also I need new drill bits to drill holes for the grab irons.

Hey spdrew,
I just saw the part about the pilots and what to do about them. It's not a simple answer, but there are many BB threads here that show how to deal with them, but you have to go through to see which ones have that detail done OR you can go to Brian Banna's site and there are a few examples of how to deal with the pilot and how to deal with the coupler pocket -that you will have to make, or come up with some other way of getting a fixed coupler in there, once you make the pilot proto the original coupler system is not going to work.

Looking good, especially for a first build. Those Cannon parts can get addicting.
The only time I wouldn't put something on a model prior to painting is if it gets in the way of masking. This typically means some of the grab irons up the high hood in the rear and the nose grabs on the short hood. Otherwise it depends on the paint scheme. If you're doing SP it's mostly a solid color so in my opinion everything else, including pilot details, would go on now. Touching up with a brush for other colors is easy if it's in small amounts (the MU cables, plug covers, etc.)

I'm impressed on how well that cannon cab went together for a first build!

I'm impressed on how well that cannon cab went together for a first build! Could NOT agree more!!! Those cabs give the most seasoned old farts headaches! It SEEMS that NOT knowing what a pain in the butt they are - is actually an advantage!!! Looking REALLY good!! Carmine

Hello all, I'm back with progress. Almost ready for a coat of primer. Just missing a few details like lost eye bolts, proper SP Jackstands, and a few other items. She ain't prototype perfect, but fairly close. Let me know your thoughts?

Hi,
Any progress on this build? I also wanted to ask where did you get your SP lighting packages and do you have a part number? Looking for both front and rear.
Thanks, Brad

Hey All college is done, as of May 2015...then I got a job. Anyway, here is my FiRST primer job. I used Tcp Primer since I will be using TCP SP Lark Dark Grey and Tcp SP Scarlett for paint colors.
