When I discovered Hi-Tech Details produced an SD39 side I started to thinking I needed a couple to help represent my espee fleet. Then I discovered Mr. David Hussey's SD39 projects on his PBase Account I knew then I had to have a couple. I picked up a couple of Kato SD40s for the base and proceeded to gather the appropriate cannon parts. In the process I started experimenting with further modeling techniques and details. I decided to model an early unit with the waffle radiator intake, number 5306. The second is number 5323. This and several other units has a unique SD35 type internal air intake filter and 5323 has the farr radiators. They have different cab sub bases and different front step in conjunction with the locomotive's ballast. Still rough and need a lot of cleaning up. Two modeling techniques I tried was a more detailed dynamic brake area and a way to simulate the three horizontal ribs that are apparent on the internal filter screen on some versions of this model. Here are two good examples from Richard Percy's web site, I accomplished this by taking a fine saw and sawing 3 parallel groves, trying not to break through the other side. As my luck goes I broke through a couple times but found I could fill in the saw mark with .020 styrene rod. As I continue I will update the thread. cheers,

Where can you get those SD39 sides? Walthers doesn't list them.

You can only get them direct from Hi Tech Details via their web site. Roll over the "mouse here for menu" on the right, select "catalog", select drop down option 3 and they are the second item down, part number HTD-2000. These things are great, I just wish they would produce sides for additional models of locomotives. I enjoy "building" the model. Cheers,

Front ends and radiators of the two different numbers: 5306 front still needing some cleanup and Radiator utilizing Plano SD45 radiators and P-B-L grab iron ends for the bolts. They look a little over sized but not too bad a little further away. 5323 front, I need to fill in the space to finish the steps, used extra parts from the cannon and co 35 line of sub-base. The SD 39 does not appear to have the box step of the GP35, so I used the parts for the front steps. and Farr radiator cheers,

Hi Jeff, nice build so far. If you decide to build another SD39 and go with another Kato starting point, like I have also on mine, try using the Kato SD45 as a starting point. The Kato SD40, while having the right length porches, has the high steps and pilot plates as seen on the earliest SD40's with hand brakes in the nose. It's like an EMD carry over from SD35 production and changed a little bit later in SD40 production. The Kato SD45 has the right low steps and later pilot plate. All you need to do is cut back the conductors side behind the cab where the blower runs down the walkway and you move the cab, nose & sub base back to get your porch again. The Kato SD45 also has the right nose with no handbrake just in case you go the cheaper non Cannon nose route. I went cheap with mine and used the Kato nose & sub base because mine are freelance and more Santa Fe version with Farr radiator grills like most SP SD39's. The SP extra boxes added to the front of the walkways by the nose are extra ballast. SP's SD39's were seriously heavy units to help creep up the mountain grades.

Thanks deez for pointing out the inconsistency that I now have to fix. Just kidding, I appreciate the input but since I was going to rebuild the pilots it is merely a matter of adding to the other side of the step to drop it lower.
Paulie I am glad I can inspire you as so many have inspired me.
More pics coming soon.
Cheers,
