The latest set of HO scale hood ends I've designed to be printed using Shapeways' service are now online. Compared to the RS18 and RSC13 ends I was suprised at just how many different variations there were among the RS3 fleet. I've counted at least four different variations in the headlights and countless variations in access doors. In the end I've elected for a somewhat generic end. I'm particular proud of how well the headlight worked out. These join the other MLW parts I've been working on over the last few weeks: www.shapeways.com/shops/princestreetAs I work through the design of each of these parts I'm developing a new found respect for the designers who created these classic lines in the first place and the craftsman who fashioned these same parts in steel. On first glance, one might disregard these as simple and pragmatic pieces of design and then lust after a more popular F unit or similarly regarded locomotive and altogether miss just how many little design nuances are built into these parts. Simple and elegantly beautiful pieces of industrial design. It sure is nice to have this project to work on to provide an opportunity to appreciate it all.

Very nice! There isn't much that builds appreciation and an eye for detail for a subject quite like modeling it. I feel the same way you do on these about RS1s after doing them in 3D.

I completely agree with regard to the RS1 too. I used to restore and still nurture a passion for Volvo 240 station wagons. Same argument for them too. Lots of folks quipping about how brick-like they were. I've worked on them enough to know there's not a straight or square line anywhere on that car. What they did was wrap a very fluid shape around a very defined purpose: "Most storage without the car looking like the box it was carrying."

Ha, we're alot alike...I'm what my friends call the "Jetta Man" having owned almost a half dozen early 80's vintage Jettas. (most were parts machines to keep ol' blue alive which I sold in 2012) Not sure why I love these cars, but they have always been my 'dream' car...One day I'll own the covetted Mars Red 1984 GLi with AC and a sunroof!

Terrific machine, Sean. I remember when they were first launched. I'll have to go mining for photos from my own Volvo owning past. I've always been a 240 diehard. A fellow Volvo friend once remarked that once you've owned a Volvo you compare all the other cars you'll own to it for all the good and all the bad. I sure miss my last brick.

Yeah, understood. I never drove my GLi as much as I wore it. It was a perfect-fitting second skin!
Going to look at my next one (potentially) in Angus ON next week...x'ed fingers...

Sean, any luck with the car in Angus? I'm sorry I missed your post but realise that perhaps by now you've already seen it.

these ends are quite smooth, with a very minor texture on the front face, Maybe a very light sand, or quite possibly just the primer and paint, is going to be enough!

Wow. I'm impressed with how well these printed for you. Thanks for the terrific photos.
The headlights looked like they rendered really nicely.

We talked on the phone, and he was pretty staunch on what he was expecting to get for the car, for something that I have to put back together. He swore its all there, but the engine harness is cut...big faux pas AFAIC. I might still go look at it. The pics show zero rust on the fender lips and windshield corners which are definite pluses for a car of this vintage. We'll see.
