I don't know anything about this railroad and I stumbled across its existence on another forum. I'd like to throw around the idea of an ho version of what I believe is a low emissions rebuild from a gp38-2 but really have no information on it. Apparently what I've found on the internet it's either a MP20GP or MP20b-3 but all I know is it has one sharp looking paint job. Depending on information and the knowledge from other members on this type of locomotive I'd like to see if it would be worth the effort to model this engine. I'd like to know what would be the base model I would need to start with and what parts I would need that would set it apart from a standard gp38 (fans, grilles, etc.) Any info would be a big help, thanks. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2948467www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1900556

Not 100 percent sure, but I think the base unit was a GP50. If not, then a GP40. Definitely a loco with 3 rad fans (as opposed to the 2 on a GP38).

I noticed that as well. There's 2 of them #20 and #21, a website says one of them was built from a gp38 and the other is a 50. But obviously would be easier to use a gp50 for either unit. There's other details about it too like no blower housing so I don't know which doors I'd have to replace it with and all the grilles look to be flush with the hood. Those seem like the major changes that would need to be made. As for the striping it looks similar to an ATSF or LAJ scheme but I can't find decals for either road.

Microscale 87-248 will give you the stripes.

The other one was made from an ex-DRGW GP40. UP's were ex-Mopac GP50.

Thanks for the decal tip, I think I found the correct cannon & co. doors that I can replace the blower housing with and the radiator grilles I need. This build could possibly be in my comfort zone as far as modifications that need to be made to the body.

I have an interest in these units as I (in the future) want to build a more expanded layout of the Southern Cali area. As you probably already know PHL is the small railroad that handles rail ops in the Port of Los Angeles. They also have a few modified SD40s.
There are several things that are just a little bit different like the doors behind the clean air room. Notice how they aren't flush with the body and how they seem to have a different arrangement. Not sure, but I also think they are a lower height than normal EMDs. Even the pilots seem different, certainly the radiator grill area has to be handled.
